The public address announcers 'kept the spectators and medical team well informed throughout the day. Two lO-minute qualifiers . and one .semi was run in the 125 and 250cc Expert classes. . . . .. Boise's Kenny Gallegos impressively won the first 125cc qualifier over Larry Rebich, Derrick Personette.and . Washington's Ken New. The second · qualifier was similar with local l:0ren Shockey leaving Washington riders Gary Kuest, Brett Trembley and Ross . Learn fighting for second and Utah riders Michael O'Driscoll and Eldon · Copier filling out the top six places. . In the first 250cc qualifier, Oregon's Jim Wiant took the lead briefly ahead of George Collin~ham, Jr. a~d John Kaufman, Olympia Beer/Ray s'Cyclesponsored. Jim would have to make the . main through the semi. A three way battle for first ensued between Collingham, Kaufman and Ken New . "Bo" McCutchen was holding on to fourth as Jeff Cropper and Troy Folck were moving . through the pack. Kaufman took the lead from Collingham, then New moved into first leaving Collingham to fend off Cropper. At the flag, it was New . . Kaufman, Cropper, Collingham and McCutchen. Washington's Rick Benek got . the holeshot in the last 250cc quahfier ahead of Pete .Schwartz , John Archuelata and Ross Learn. . Benek held his lead and beat Learn by two bikelengths at the flag . Kuest and Warren Hickman came from behind to cinch third and fourth . . Jason Hawks (All Season Sport of Bo ise) took the lead from Gary Randall on the first la p of the 125cc semi and held it to the end . Chip Young (Mt. Motor Sport) held off Randall during the first half of the race and Jody Becker the last half. Tom Fitzgerald led all but the last two laps of the 250cc semi when Troy · Folck (MOlO-X Fox) passed him on the steep 300-foot long sand hill. Pete Schwartz was th ird and Jim Wiant fourth . The Open Expert race was dominated by Yamaha Motor Corp. sponsored Tom Poage. Tom finished 15 seconds ahead of Mark Olbeding in the first rnoto and Enos Vega in the second. Mike O'Driscoll kept Poa ge in sight the first moto only to drop out and then finished third in the last . The Mini Expert class was composed of riders from four states. In the first moto, brothers Snell and Scott Johnson put their R&D Suzukis out ahead of Rodney Reynolds, Rusty Yamamoto, Steve Liedberg and Derek Ashlock. Snell established a .comfortable lead and finished first , Liedberg got around both Reynolds and Yamamoto for second while Ashlock crashed hard on a back straight giving fourth to Brian Eaton. . In the second moto Scott Johnson had trouble with the waterhole while · Snell took the lead to win his second moto. Ashlock continued in second fOI · several laps until Yamamoto passed inside on a tight left hander. Reynolds took advantage of a slide out by Ashlock to take over third. Ashlock and a lapped rider bumped together, letting Liedberg by for fourth .. At the start of the 125cc mam Gary Kuest (Airway Heights Yamaha) was set in behind leader Kenny Gallegos, Tad Richards and Rocky Temple. Richards dropped out of the top five while Gallegos gave up the lead to Temple. Kaufman, Kuest and Ken New then moved ahead of Gallegos. Temple led the first half and Kuest the last half of the race. . Michael Kinnear (Cycle Mart Gresham, OR) got the holeshot in the . 250cc main followed by Wiant , Hickman and Kuest. Before three laps were over Kuest had the lead with Hickman and FoIck on his tail. Meanwhile Kinnear, Eddie Tynismaa and Randy Sargent were racing f?r third . Hickman took the lead early In the race to stretch it by three seconds · over Folck. Sargent made a great ride from seventh to finish fourth overall . Results MINI B: 1. Dave Ouone; 2. Ron George; 3.
