As ne w leaders Earl Cherry and Tom Hollister , both on KX 250's, started swapping that position, Priddy mov ed around Ga ry Chandler for third and then methodically p icked off Hollister and Cherry before the fin ish. The fin al moto was not as dramatic . P riddy b uilt a so li d a dva nta ge, holdin g it until the end , an d clai med first overa ll. Four riders comprised the battle for second. Cherry, Chandler , H ollister and Billy Cli ck (H on) kept ea ch other busy but all allowed Priddy to esca pe . At the fini sh lin e ' Ea rl Ch erry had some brea thi ng room for second, Hollister and Click got around Chandler, a nd late cha rging Cli ck almost nipped Holli ster a t the flag. "Flying Bryan" Taylor from Bandera just might be one of the big stories of the '79 Champion ship Series a s evi den ced by his p erformance today. Aboard Yam ah a International suppo rted-TCR Racing YZ Yamahas , Taylor clobbered everyone in the 100c c B group and Sen ior Minibike ; and set the fas test lap time of the day, _1:47.75, that wasn' t best ed by the Pros once the track became unmerciful later in t he aft ernoon. Taylor led every lap of every moto and , after this fir st weekend , a ppears unstoppable . Greg Fouts from Amarillo claim ed the 100cc A g ro u p h on ors. All the Amateur a nd Intermediate classes will be split until the final two week ends when elim ina tions and single classes will decide th e ch am p ions . Danny Storbeck , fro m San Antonio , an d Eddi e Vreeland , f ro m Frien dswood , were simply too hot to handle in the Junior Min i and 50cc classes respec t ive ly. Both a ppear capab le of goi ng all the way. The 125cc Novice class was sp lit into four groups , each with their own win n er . David Hugh es , fr om Pasadena , recorded th e .fastest moto time of all the class es in gr oup B on th e way to his ove rall win . Hughes' spe ed today m ay or m ay not mean anything, however . as the key to victory d uring a fo ur wee kend Novice shoor out . is survival. T he other 125cc Novi ce group winners were Joh n Cherry fro m Kileen in hea t A ; last yea r's Mini cham pio n T im Butler from Azle won heat race C ; a nd Glen Ingram from Austin took grou p D. The 250 cc Novices were sp lit into three heats , the fastest without a doubt being group B '; T he riders finishing first and second in that one set the two fastest times of all the riders in this class . Jay Knight and Glen Goodier were the two speedsters dominating group B. Darren McK ee from Mt . Pleasant is expected to ch allenge for the title as his victo ry in grou p A would suggest. H ouston rid ers Scott Head a nd Mark Ric e were fa stest in groupC . "Bu llet Ben" Theriot from Denham Springs, Louisiana (Ohl the sha me of it all if a Cajun wins the Texas championship) sorched the l25cc Intermediate class group C first moto on the way to the fastest heat ra ce time a nd the over all . Tony Neilsen sal vaged some respe ct for Texas by catching a nd passing Bullet Ben in the final moto of that grou p. but Theriot still managed to beat overa ll th e toughest bunch of the three class splits. Todd Kimbrell from Hillsboro was sim p ly too fast -for the rest in grou p B, and Randy Mansell from Arl ington won group A . Theriot returned for the 250 cc Interm ediat es , aga in facing the toughest opposition in group A , win n in g both motos com forta b ly. T roy Ro ge rs from Fort Worth had an easy time winning grou p B and both m otos . Th e cla ss is unu suall y compet iti ve this yea r foll owing seve ra l years of one rid er d omination . Before t he Texas Seri es en d s , th e 50 I ntermed ia tes m ay well provid e the best fireworks of a ll th e cla sses . Open Intermediates wer e spli t into t wo g r ou ps a s we ll. Both we r e extrem ely competitive each mot o and no one ri der appears superior to th e rest. Scott Buscanyi fro m Pasadena and Joey Balc ol m from San Anton io were the two hea t race winners today; but more than likely we a in' t seen nothin' yet. Bob "Supe rm a n" Pop e didn 't leap a ny tall buildings today, but · he d id ma nage to win the Over- 30 J u nior div ision ove r Ji m Ca lve rt , Donny Pen well, Danny Co le, and Greg " I' ve never rid de n on t his track before" Labbe . Bartley GP 79 a real toughie this time By Linda Booth BARTLEY, NE, APR . 22 After thre e years of being deluged with rain Bartiey finally got to run a tough and varied course. In p revious years rain had caused the race to be re -routed to a different course so rid ers could fin ish the event. This year's cou rse included fast irrigation ca na l ro ad , miles of d eep sand, steep uphills , wh it e knuckle downhills a nd m ile after m ile of timber. Bartley's Grand Prix go t started promptly at I :00 p .m . with the riders straddling their bikes , arms pointed skyward , waiting for t he ech o of th e shotgu n blast off th e. buildi ngs on the little town's main stree t. The heavyweight Open class had a g re at co n test going b etween Bi ll O sthoff, Bo b P r uss ma n a nd Bob Moore . At the end of the firs t lap Osthoff was leading with Prussm a n close beh in d . Pru ssm an ove rtoo k Osthoff a little past the hal fway point , b ut as he was tearing through th e tim ber , a dangling grapevi ne ca ug ht Prussman by th e nec k a nd yanked him off his b ike. By t he en d of the race he looked like the loca l .vigila ntes had strung him up fo r horset hievi ng . W hi le Prussm an was putting him self back toget her , Bob Moore captured second p lace . Moore ma n aged t he fas test lap tim e of the day on his th ird la p , co m p leti ng th e 18-mil e co u rse in 33 m inutes , which put him in to th e lead where he stayed for the rest of th e day. The ph ysically demanding course caused even spe edy Moore to add two m inutes to h is lap tim e for t he remainder of t he ra ce . Osthoff dropped bac k as ste ady Rich Dostal pu lled up to second pla ce at th e start of th e fourth la p and kept it. Only 16 Open class riders fin ished the full six laps in the alloted tim e - ou t of 78 sta r ters . John Morgan of Go lden , Co lor ado, got off to a fast sta rt at the beginning of the ra ce a nd was leading the 250cc 's at the end of th e first la p , but Du dl ey Biddl e q uickly closed in tigh t a t secon d and Rick Coa tman took third . At th e end of the thi rd la p the three to p fin ishers ha d settled into th eir fin al trophying order of Biddle , Sturm and Lindquist. T h e dem a n d ing cou rse took its toll in thi s cla ss too. O nl y eight finished th e fu ll six la ps in the given tim e . The 20 0cc cl a ss winner , Darryl Dempste r , proved his tough riding a b ility as h e p icked up st eam throughout the whole race. Moving from sixth place in the first a nd second laps, to second place in the third, he led the final three laps. Dempster was the only rid er to complete the six laps within the tim e limit with fast 35 m inutes lap times. K.W. Pelon, who finished second in the 200cc class , started strong and was leading at th e end ofthe th ird lap , but fell back into his eventual second place slot. _ The Old Timers race (40 years + ) boiled down to a dog eat dog contest between Don Overbeck a nd local farmer Bill Nelson . Overbeck led the first two laps with Nelson's front wheel chewing at his exha ust pipe. Nel son took over th e lead on the third lap a nd successfu lly held Ove rbeck off for the remainder of the day. Rounding out third place was Jim McQuatters of Laramie , Wyoming. The Old Timers proved that they were a grizzly group. Five out of th e 14 sta rters completed the five la ps. The trophy winners seemed to think it was th e greatest course yet , while those wh o didn't fare so well thought it was a mean , tough run. A dirty frazzl ed rider pick ing up his fri end's trophy at th e en d of th e ra ce , when asked whe re h is buddy was replied , "He's in the back of the van trying to fini sh d ying . " Another co m ment was , " We always love to come to the Bartley Grand Prix - it's our on e fun race of the yea r. Why'd you guys have to get so damned ser ious th is yea r?" Riders were entere d from as far away from this t iny fa rm ing com m u ni ty (populati on 283) as Oregon , T exas and Missouri , Minnesota with the bulk of them coming from neighbori ng Colorado.
