Of th e $20 .000 worth of rewards th at will be presented over the next month , a sig nifica nt amount is sch edul ed to stuff the pockets of Exp erts. Four T exans tod ay not only ea rned some "wa lki ng a rou nd money" but took the first ste p towa rds a 1979 stat e cha mpionship . Dennis Br and ma d e h is m oney riding a Honda to victo ry in th e 125cc cla ss; Roger Bro wn put th e ora nge crush on the 250cc Experts with a Can -Am ; Darrell Holingshe ad ou t la ste d th e Open Exp erts aboard a Suzuk i ; and vetera n Wymal} Priddy was the top Over-Sf Exp ert riding a Honda . Dennis Brand (CSM Honda from Dallas) , a d isplaced Californian and 1978 AMA /N ik on Camera Rookie of th e Year , was the 125cc Expert winn er aft er a tough battle with Glen Johnson (H owa rd Racing-Pasadena Kawasaki KX ) both motos; one of which Brand lost. In th e fi rst moto Brand was second a t th e sta rt behind R icky Glas er (who set a scorchi ng pace th e first two laps be fore retiring with igni tion problem s on th e Rose-R ich Yamaha) . Br and took the lead on lap three only to hav e J ohnson ca tch up and challenge for th at position until a m istake set him b ack to th ird be h in d Keith Davis on a H onda . . Because of th e large numbers of co ntes ta nts , t he 125 cc a nd 25 0cc Expert classes were sp lit in to A and B first motes with the decider bei ng the fin al mot o . In heat B of th e l 25cc Expert , Rich ard Reeves led the entire moto on th e Arl ington Suzuk i, beatin g Ho nd a moun ted Danny Doss by one second at the fla g . The start of th e fina l moto saw Glen Johnson 's Ka wasak i fla sh into th e lead with Brand 's H onda right beh ind . Reeves, thi rd on th e first lap , appe are d to be closin g on th e leading duo of Johnson-Brand until even tu a lly he droppe d b ack to fi ft h a n d th ird over a ll. Nothing changed up front . Brand co u ld not force a mistake from the vet eran Johnson a nd th e two took th e chec kered flag sep arat ed by less than a seco n d . Behind them Kirk Dill on , who was h a ving a b rillia n t second rnoto , p assed Jimmy Martin with two laps re m ai ni ng , getting th e best of a race long fight for third po sitio n , Dill on 's last mot o heroi cs were good fo r fourth over a ll and you ngs te r Keith Da vis took fifth . Roger Brown from New Br aunfels , wh o has had several opportunities in th e past to exp lai n th e th rill of a T exas State Championship as well as the agony of some painful defeats, sta rted off the 1979 250cc Expert c h a m p io ns h ip c ha se with a gu tsy performance on the Howard Racing Can-Am MX-5 . The gutsy stu ff took place in heat B as Brown's near perfect sta rt almost end ed in disaster when another rider sent R oger through th e second turn fencing. Br own gathered up th e Can·A IJl. his composure , and starting dead last , set off in pursuit of a disappearing pack , ending up in third pl a ce. Gary Grah am (Suz) a nd Derek Wedding (Ho n ) had th e lead on the first lap ahe ad of Dicky Turnbo and Ricky Glas er . W edding took over on lap tw o a nd wa s fixing to blow everyo ne away but his engine blew up instea d. It was a tough endi ng for last yea r's three clas s champion who was through for th e da y. Meanwh ile , Roger Brown was ca tc hing up to the leaders and mov ed to fifth as Graham a nd Turnbo held th e lead . Graham , in his first full scale Exp ert cla sh, was riding fl aw lessly and esta blis hed a three seco nd advantage over Turnbo's Honda that he ca rried to the fin ish. In th e heat B action , Glen Johnson (H on) p assed ho lesho t a rtis t Wyman Priddy's H onda on la p two , then set the fa stest Exp ert la p tim e of't he day and didn't shu t down until he had a 20 second lea d at th e fini sh .
