Riders in the 500cc class began thinking they h ad a chance to see the top after they started passing the 700 foot mark . Their lane had been used last yea r and it was cons iderably sm oo t he r than the Exhibition lane. Kerry Peterson (CAl thought he was go ing to be the one; his 400cc Mai co was rea lly singi ng when he passed 900 feet . but he m ust ha ve hit the last puckerbu sh on the hill he crashed at 96~ fee t. Waiting in th e hol e was Bill Landsborough (CAl on a new 400 cc Yamaha . Landsborough said that his plans were to follo w th e pa th as fa r as possibl e and stay in bounds. After he rea lized tha t he ha d gotten ab ove th e beaten p ath he began co nce ntra ting o n .sta ying in bounds eve n more an d not messing up . It too k a while for th e Bees to chec k his path befor e assuri ng that he would be cred ited with a n over th e hill ride . but it was fin all y declared . Bill Landsborough officia lly became the second person to go over the Widow maker . These two men had the riders in th e Exhibition class thinking big. There were over 100 riders trying for a share of the $~ .OOO purse p lus the extra $1.000 that would go to the first Exhibition rider over the top with a clea n run . Big Bill H a rrison (CAl and his 1526cc Ha rley had the best chance of capturing the 'p rize beca use he had the last ride in th at class. Vince Bertol uc ci (CAl. riding a bo u t ha lfway through the class. was hoping . tha t he could maneuver his trick 750cc Triumph to his second win in a row. He threw a chain on his first ride and ha d to get it on th e second . He stopped at 9~2 feet . short of his 1.1~ 7 foot mark in 1978 but high enough to put him in first . Bert olucci was beginning to relax a little when Big Bill Harrison came to the line. Harrison makes his Harley look small but it has enough ponies to carry him up th e mountain . He left the line. hit the hill just right . and went to 1.000 feet with hardly a bobble. At 1.056 feet one of the steps on t he mountain stoppe d him - but he had gone far enough for first.
