Tom Berry (58) and Ascot w inner Gary Scott dueled until Berry DNF. ~~A"Scot halt mile By Maureen Lee Photos by Wizard Racing GA RDE NA, CA , APR. 27 Gary Scott , setting t he fa stest ti me of the night for the second week in a row (22 .27), m ade it a clean sweep Friday night - in 32 spi te of d etermin ed attempts by t he lik es of Corky Kee n er , S te ve More head , Scott Pearson and Tom Berry on a T riu mph that ran like a roc ket. Skip Aksla nd d id n' t survive lap one of the first hea t. He got in to a ta n k sla pper on a wet spo t co mi ng out of tu rn two and completely m od ified th e fro nt end . It took three men to d ra g th e mach ine awa y; Skip got banged a rou n d a bit but walk ed awa y under his own power. Hank Scott m issed th e eve ni ng's racing a ft e r the Norton crac ked its cases in practice . In th e semi the starter put Sanders, Knapp and Law son on the back row for getting anxiou s. but it sure d idn't slow Sanders down any. He was up to second behind Mike Minnig in nothin g flat a nd th e pa ir of them provided some real enterta inmen t. Minnig put a little spa ce between h imself and Sanders. which was very fortunate. He took a hard fall and Sanders avoi ded h im by taking to th e wall . Sand ers cracked up his ankle , lost th e sole of his boo t a nd ben t th e brake lever, a ll of whic h co ntributed to pu tting him into the hay in turn one the next tim e he got arou nd to th ere. T he semi finis he d wit h Sa nders , Lawson , Sperry and Buddy Rob inson transferring . The Trophy Dash was composed of Ga ry Sco tt , Bo bb y Sa nders . Steve Mor eh ea d and Scott Pea rson . Again , Sco tt flew into th e lead with th e other t hree unable to keep up wit h him . Scott got th e ma in event lead bu t Pea rson got by h im o n t he b a ck straight , along with T om Berry. . and th e war was on . Scott nail ed Pearson on th e front straight a fte r co up le of laps and went afte r Berry. Berry's T riumph was running as grea t as a Trium ph has ever run at Ascot. Back and fort h went th e lead until Gary too k it fir m ly in hand with T om sti ll rig ht with him sho u ld he mak e th e ba res t m istake. Keener go t by Mor ehead and was now after Pearson . Then, in cred ibl y, in full flight th e Triumph blew. A rod let go a nd white smo ke a rose, m aking us think of an old raci ng adage - th ey a lways ru n th e fastest just befor e they b low! Keener got by Pearson on th e fro n t chute , a nd d arned if that red flag didn't co me ou t aga in . This tim e Bu ddy Robinson was ro lling in th e ha y on the north turn . But over half th e race h ad been ru n a nd that was it. We didn't ge t to see th e a n tici p a ted go b etw een Keen er and Scott , maybe next week folks . The Juniors are still providing all th e action you cou ld want. The you ng Pennsylvanian Bob Crabbe , who rides like a National number with severa l seaso ns under his belt , was th ere in full force and m et up with Charli e Summers, Eddie San Ramon . Mike Inderbitzin and a few of th e other Junior sho es in the first hea t. Crabbe tried th e high power line ou t of turn four on th e last lap but Summers got to t he flag first. Next he at Stev e Monger left it on going into turns one and two , follow ed up by John Burnett, Jay Lewis and Dorothy Rowe. Mon ger got off on t he bad spot, which again brought out th e red flag , a nd the heat fin ish ed Burnett, Lewis, and Steve Polson . T hird heat was a ll J eff Ha ney on th e Honda. H aney is now a factory Hond a rider; a feat unhea rd of to be pic ked up for a facto ry ride as a Ju n ior a nd the hon or is well deserved . In the mai n event , everyone haul ed away in a tigh t bu nc h, whic h doesn 't help H a ney who has to make up for his lack of power by m aneu verin g at will. The first la p run d own was Summers, Burnett, Haney, Crabbe and Ryan . a Crabbe d id n' t wast e much time in making h is move ; he ca m e ri ght th rough th e middle th ro ugh turn four , going from fou rt h to first in on e fell swoo p . Summers held on to second and Haney pa ssed Burnett on the back straight. Summers had his hands full with Haney, who finally nailed him, but there was no way he was going to ca tc h C rab be . When the ra cing was over Haney wanted a look at Crabbe's restrict or p late. Although th e referee had checked it last week, the carb was opene d up in full view of everyone and th e refer ee again declared it legal. The H ond a p eopl e aren ' t co m p lete ly sa tisfied with that decisi on . They feel a little "ste arnlini ng" may hav e taken place to the plate bu t Crabbe will be back next wee k, a n d so will Haney and Summer s a nd all. Last but not least wer e th e N ovices wh o defini te ly had th eir sh are of crashes. Scott Podergois co nt in ue d his win ni ng wa ys, with Bobby Garabedian r eall y tryin g ou t R ich Arn a iz fo r seco nd . T he n came Denn is Camp and St eve Karsten , all of them spaced evenly apart . Right at the end Arnai z really made a big try for th e lead but he overdi d it a bit on turn two , losing preciou s space, and couldn't make it up. He still finished second. W e ha ve word that Honda will officially enter two of their 500's in the Nationals May 12, ridden by Rick Hocking and Mickey Fay . Haney will contest th e Junior Invitational.
