Beginner honors with Cary Chrisman
following for the Begin ne r Open
honors .
Aurelio Siracuse was the Begi n ner
Trailbike ace , while Sandy Love
earned the first Novice girl title.
The second loop adventures began
with Ogilvie continuing to dog Miller
with a good shot at taking the lead
when he got a flat . Continuing on with
only eight miles to go , his tr ansmission
stuck in fifth gear and he could hea r
all the broken pieces rattling around.
He dropped out at the last check.
Meanwhile, Invader Dick Bu r ley
was pushing Checker George Zuber for
position. Coming into the pits Dick
was rig ht behind George . They both
got smooth, qu ick pits and ';Vere back
out on the trail in record time .
At check three these two wer e still
due ling as they hea d ed for check fou r.
Finally it was Zu ber who took the
checkered first with Bu rley only a dust
cloud behind him .
Now Sixberry had moved into the
second spot with a good lead over third
place. O ne half mile from the finish
Mike threw a chain. He pulled off to
the side and hurriedly put it back on .
In the distance he could hear Scheffers
coming up the trail. He started his
bike again, pulled out onto the trail ,
jammed the bike into th e next gear ,
and "klu nk" ... off came the chain one
more time. By this time Scheffers was
on top of him. Lee didn't realize Mike
had lost his forward motion and rearended him. Both riders went flying.
Lee was back on his feet checking to
see if Mike was all right , and then
headed back onto the trail. Bu t now
Mike had to put the chain back on
both the back and front sprockets.
Taking the checkered flag first was
Miller who rode with a new , confident
style - low on his bike with wide open
thrott le. Sc heffe rs ; took second
followed by a d iscour aged Sixberry.
Mark Zoller had rea lly begun to pour
it on as he headed around th e secon d
loop. On th e course he hit a rock in the
dust , causi ng his bike to buc k hi m off
hard. He la nded in th e mi dd le of the
trail, knoc king the wind ou t of him .
When Max Ed dy got on th e scene
riders were goi ng around Mark, bu t no
one had stopped . Max helped Mark
off the trail and then headed for
Mike's bi ke. He saw Schumaker
coming down the trail and trie d to
direct hi m away from "the rock, " but
Rick hit it too . Rick was already running before he even hit t he ground ,
since he was trying to close in on
Da rren as the checkered was near.
Kelly Kline pushed hard on the
second loop also, catching and passing
Sheila Hopkins earning t he firs t gal
hon ors.
Pie plater Dan Hensuey took the
overall Novice win.
