Among the item. were a CB. two redar detectors end an AM/FM and weatherband radio. Unfortunately, Doug was the victim of a less -than-ideal route - ( t hey traveled 200 miles fan her than the winning vehicle). And they also dropped a UPI reporter off in Oklahoma City, which used up some time (anything for the press). Still they finished 25th overall, with a vehicle that was partially ailing. "By the finish the brake pedal went almost to the floor, and when you wanted to tum. you had to start your tum a considerable distance before the tum actually arrived. It was kind of like turning on marbles ," he said. Partially sponsored by Nikon Cameras this year, Doug hopes to be back for the next Cannonball with a serious car complete w!Jh sophisticated electromcs. In 40th place was the 1938 Ford panel truck, with a time of 61 hours and 51 minutes (let's hear it for the old reliable flathead). · Edging them out for 39th spot was the Stephen Kendall Lanes' Rolls with a time of 58 hours and 4 minutes. Tennis pro Tom Leonard and Indy driver John Mahler finished 16th in 37 hours and 46 minutes. And the fatherand-sons team finished 12th, with a time of 36 hours and 49 minutes. Professor Hickey and his two codrivers. well, they did the old alma mater proud. They came in second, with a hot time of 32 hours and 59 minutes. The Suzuki? Theirs was an ep ic journey. Geo rge Egloff, the first rider got stopped by a local Darien police . officer when he was going to fill up the gas tanks before the Cannonball started . He failed to give a turn signal. No ticket was issued . The rest of the Suzuki riders should have been so lucky . Wendy Epstein picked up a ticket on ' the way to Mem - . phis. Ken Ward collected one in Arkansas. The Arkansas Smokies were then kind enough to escort hi~ the rest of the way across Arkansas at 55 mph, where at the Oklahoma border Okie Smokies were waiting. They - escorted him across the entire state of Oklahoma at 55 mph. On the last leg of the run, Dirk James managed to ride through a snow storm at 120 mph ' withou t incident, only to get nailed about 12 miles from the California border for doing 96 mph. Seven minuteslater he was WFO again. South of Barstow he got stopped ' again while running 115 mph. This time he was detained 40 minutes and had to post a bond of $195 . In spite of all of this , the overall average for his leg of the trip was an incredible .90 mph . This was due in large part to the , fact that for" bout 300 miles of desert riding he was able to run at an iii: dicated 125-130 mph. "The engine had really loosened up by then ." he said. ' The Suzuki was the 28th vehicle to arrive at the Portafino Inn . "The arrival was tumultuous," Dirk said. "Even though these were car people, the welcome I ' received was much warmer than that extended to any of the cars I saw arrive. None of them thought the bike would make it. " The Suzuki's overall finish was 30th spot, with a time of 43 hours, 32 m inutes, The winner? The Jaguar dealers/ racers Heinz and Yarborough (no relation to Cale), with a blistering time of 32 hours and 51 minutes. That's , quick. But they, and some of the other drivers, feel a time of 30 hours is not impossible - given the proper conditions. Right.
