G dT I ran ota I • CN 13 I I ~-- ---------------------------- --- everybody think b~ck about three years ago when Mark used to dominate the Medford track. When the fans heard, at the beginning of the season, that Mark was going to try to make a . comeback, after a three year absence , everyone wondered if he could do it. Mark did take the overall , but right behind him was a hard-charging determined rider by the name of Mike Zillgitt. Just two weeks earlier Mike had been racing in the 250cc Intermediate class . He decided there was only one way to see just how fast he could go , and that was to move up to the Pros. When the gate dropped in the first 250cc Pro moto. . Randy Threson on his Yamaha got the holeshot , while Matheison and Zillgitt pulled middle of the pack starts. A couple of laps later Matheisen and Zillgitt had moved up to second . and third respectively. The three circled the track. Zilligitt hanging very close to Matheisen . Suddenly Threson fell while driving through a fast right hander. Matheisen and Zillgitt went by, and pulled away from the rest of the class. A couple of laps later , Matheisen fell in the same corner that had - claimed Threson a few laps earlier. That) what Zillgill was waiting for. He passed Matheisen who was scrambling to get back on his KTM and get restarted. Zillgitt led the 250cc Pros for a whole 75 feet; up to the next corner where he too fell down. By that time Matheisen was up, restarted and around the fallen Zilligitt, who restarted but couldn't catch Matheisen; that's how they finished. In the second moto, Matheisen .worked his way to first place quickly and held on for the whole moto. Mike Zillgitt held second but couldn't catch Matheisen. There were a couple of other . exciting and humorous events during the day. For example: In the 125cc Junior class there were visions of the famous Wolsink and Mikkola finish at the Carlsbad GP a few years ago . Racing for the checkered flag in fourth and fifth place were Devin Madison and Kevin Colegrove. Both riders charged down the final straight to the fin ish line , neither backing off the throttles for the turn behind th e finish line . Madison charged across the line in fourth place, while Colegrove almost crashed as he came across ' in fifth . It just goes to show there was no lack of determ ination or competition no matter what class or position . In the Open Junior class two brothers, Mike and Sco tt Con ner , raced against each other, laughing a ll the way. That doesn't mean the racing wasn 't serious though . One time the two got so close they ra n into each other and both fell down . Mike got up first and that's how they finished . Since there were only two riders in this class only one trophy was 10 be presented. These two were such good sports and put on such a good show it was decided that both of them should get trophies. Mike and Scott were last seen la ughing and walking away with their friends . Resu lts MIN I BEG: 1. Chris Crtswel l (Yam); 2. James Price (Yam). MINIJ R: t. Justin Goyar U
