The cou rse ha d bee n mod ified slightly to take out a couple of ba d areas. Joe Turnbau gh . starting on the fron t row . took the lea d im me dia tel y. Riding a 400cc Yamaha . T urnba ugh was easy to spot from a distance d ue to his bright·pink Invad ers M.C. jersey. At th e end of one lap. he led Steven W illis (Yam) . Zack Peterson (Yam). Dick McMillen (H us), Ron Monr eal (Yam). Brad Denham (Yam). Mike Wa lter s (Ya m) and Dal e Tedrow (Mai). Lead ing the 250c c class was Brad Ne vins (Hus) with J ohn Ferro (Hon) and Tim Nerhing (H us) in his wake. T urnba ugh conti nued to lead . but behi nd him a three-way d ice was sh a pi ng u p betw een Mo n r eal . Denham and Steve H ar per (Ya m), who ha d started back in the sixth row . (Riders started 15 per row . . ea ch row lea ving 15 seconds a p ar r.) T hey conti nued thei r pa rade rig ht d own to th e fin ish . th e dista nce bet ween th em usually dete rm ined by who was pi tt ing at the time . T he ch eckered flag was shown first to Turnbau gh . bu t the event was decided on elapsed time. Ha rper took the win . Mo nre a l was seco nd . T urnba ugh third (he took th ird in th is ra ce t he pr evious yea r) a nd Denham was fou rth . Fifth . a nd sti ll with the 250cc lead. was Nevi ns. Sandwich ed between him and second 250cc Novice Greg Zitterkoph (Mai). were Edw ard Shinault (H us) a nd Bill Wa ll (Yam ). Third 250cc rider T im Nething rounded ou t th e to p 10. _ Beginner wins went to Lorin Ganske (400cc Yam ) and David Dunham (250cc Bul ). whi le Sen ior Novi ce victories . were taken by Al Sm it h (400cc Yam ) and T om Bell . Sf. (250cc Hus ). Sunday afternoon The fin al race of the weekend was for the 250 and 500c c Experts. ijuniors and Seniors. along with a large side hack contingent. The sunny weekend had dried up the course quite a bit and ' dust ranged ' from "hea vy" (to a wet climate rider) to "light" (to a hard core desert racer). Craig Adams . D-37's number on e 500cc class motocrosse r , took full ad vantage of his front row start and blasted his KTM into the lead. Bob Balentine , on a brand-new MCSO KTM (with a 360cc engine, not the new 425cc un it) started in front of Larry Roeseler, but Roeseler soon caught him and they traded second ' back and forth with Roesel er usually holding the upper hand . " I caught and passed him , but he stayed with me ," said La rry . On the following lap , Roeseler saw Adams pushing his bike near the end of the cou rse, and Larry took the lea d. Balentine. Goat Breker (H us). Jim Fishback (Yam) , Terry Davis (Yam) and Bruce Ogilvi e (Yam) followed Roeseler in the 500c c class. Max Eddy. r id ing an Anah eim Husqvarna sponsored mount , had taken over the 250cc Expert lead from Mark Nation (Mai). who'd led th e class on th e first lap. The early sidehack leader was the Robert Sanner/Chris Wilcox Honda/ Wasp rig. The second hack past my va nt age point, the Bruce Butterfield/ Phil Zemke Ducari, failed to negotiate an off-camber slope and fell back wards into a body of water known as the "Blue Lagoon: ' Lightweight sidehack leaders Ron Hall/Bill Mossman (Hus) later repeated the same feat . .
