Hannah was taking it to the max on each go around the long, slightly d amp circuit. Magoo was keeping pac e and doing a good job of keeping Tripes in his third spot wh en again, hard lu ck struck, Magoo slowed at the halfway point and waved Tripes irito what had been h is hard -earned second position. The race was now between Hannah . and T ripes . best of friends off the track , ene m ies in the dirt. No one could poss ibly feel let down watching th ese two dynamite competitors thrash through their paces. Tripes di ved under Han nah in the Webco sweeper which took the Hurricane by surprise. He got out of shape momentarily and almost lost control , but he stayed on th e gas and kept on going. Hannah jumped back into the lea d on th e double jumps in the bottom of the gully. Tripes tried it again in the same place next lap . He charged into th e far outsid e line but Hannah hung inside and made it through the turn just a litt le quicker. The tw o -lap sign appeared and the pressure was heavy on Tripes as the track was getting super-slick in the fast sections now . Hannah maintained and gathered a five second lead on Tripes , who fel t it would be better ~o play it safe since there appeared to be no wa y to close the gap . He didn't seem to have the momentum he had earlier. Hannah flew pas t the last lap flag with' the big. gest lead of either moto. Tripes, and Howerton , who had gotten around Chandler for third . Gillman, Steve W ise , Mike Guerra , Clark Jones, Koji Masuda and Lenny Giger rounded out the top 10 positions for th e final moto. " I knew Tripes was there all along. It was ge t go ing. or get second ," Hannah adm itted at the trophy presentatio n . "T he tra ck was a ha rd one to ride. T he northern riders all dou b le-ju m pe d the jumps."
