to sit back and take a second look at how th e Bureau is "con trolling" our use of our desert . The Bureau expects trust and expects public coop eration to ac compl ish their g o als . but continually uses devious ta ctics to "gai n th e upper hand ." Ma ny people who hav e worked with th e Bureau's Riversid e office in a ny way we have in the last two years lost any respec t for that branch of the federal gove rn ment. We, as users, have suspected lies. fa brica tions of materia l a nd false accusa tions bu t now we have facts brought out by the court case against the Phantom Duck that the BLM does in fact use m ost any way possibl e to screw th e legitimate user on a trail ride on public thoroughfare . Rem ember the names of those BLM employees who were involved - t hey ca n ' t be tru st ed to accept our legitimate input or to give factual in formation to t he public . Also remem be r that all but one of th ese employees wer e from the Riverside office directed by District manager Jerry H illier . Remember in all ca ses that the Big Brother Bureau of Land Management with its armed rangers is watching youl Those of you that support the Duck 's fight for th e right to use our land might rem ember th e night of Ap r. 27. There will be a benefit race at Corona Ra ceway wit h several big name rider s a nd celeb rities . T he proceeds will go to the Duck Fund. Happy 17th birthday, Barbara Jean Spielman (# 12X) . , - SONNY SPIELMAN Anaheim , CA 0') l' Low day for M X 0') I write to express my d isappointment over the l Ith Annual Hangtown Motocross Classic. A "classic" mess is what the event was. The Hangtown event was su pposedly moved from its historical location, Plymouth. to Prairie City OHV Park to better handle the inc re asingly large crowds. I saw no evidence to indicate that pa rk management Iiad an y kind of a handle on anything . In reality the movement of th e event to- Prairie City is because the residen ts of Plymouth wanted to rid themselves of the derelicts that Hangtown seems to attract. On e can hardly blame them for that. A large portion of the crowd was solely interested in fighting and pla yin~ dodge -bike with - the competitors. I am sure that these people are not avid motocross fans ; th ey d id not seem to watch th e ra ce. I exp ect ed qu ick and effective tra ckcontrol enforcement aft er th e first 125cc qualifi er , but nothing happened . Only wea k an d unsuccessful remi nders no t to cross the tr ack were heard over the public ad dress syste m . T o give you an idea of the-im p roved traffic d irection (whic h consisted of a ha ndful of people armed with beer a rb itra rily motion ing cars) , it still took m e two hou rs an d forty-five m inutes to get to a freewa y on-ram p . Fina lly. if whar I 'witnessed £t Hangtown '79 was a fair representation of how a motocross sho uld be ru n and what kinds of people atten d. th em , then th e Ha ngt own Classic a nd the spo n I love, motocross , a re in the decline sta ge of gr owth . A father's birthday wish A baby girl was born one spri ng , a tiny, tender , newborn thing . She entered life tha t April da y - a special child was on her way. T he months would pass and tum to yea rs, mix ed with happiness and tears . Her ear ly life was not all fun . With deformed legs she coul d not run. 'A doctor's world , a nurse's feel would be her hom e as he should heal. A hundred d ays a nd more woul d pass before she'd pla y upon th e grass. With lots of love and doctor's ca re, her courage a nd her ted dy bear, her cri ppled legs woul d hea l new, a nd be forgot ten as she grew. . A tim e for learning now was due, to write, to spell , to tie a shoe . T o love, to learn, to understand , to be herse lf in this great land. T welve years passed since she first cried , and with her father she'd abide. Her pleasure now was something new , a motorcycle painted blue. She learned to ride with skill and grace , and thought perhaps she'd like to race . She started on a little track until she thought she had the knack . A lot of riders pa id no mind , until she left them far behind. With races lost and ' races won , the years she rode were full offun. This fearless lass who once was lame. had come to motocross and fame . She raced with girls and boys and men , and held her own with all of them . She rode with Pros and all the rest , and there were times she beat the . best . But now it's time to take a break. a time away at some small lake. To learn at school , to rest , to scheme, to plan her future and her dream. Someday - ,..-.4 ,..-.4 ,..-.4 .... s-. c, < / .. , . In his lett er Pu ett writ es, " I jus t prayed and hoped all would com e out all righ t. This was not to be. First . th e man who made the pins to ld me he would do it a t cost ($1,000) and raised the price to $2900 . He filed charges agai nst me for fraud ." Pu ett sought me ou t and asked me to make the pins. A price was given and agreed u po n by Puett and myself. He signed the order with the agreed price written thereon. Our invoice #3306 , signed by Pu ett, is dated Dec . 7, 1978 . Two checks made out to me in the sums of $300 and $500 , dated Dec . 17, 1978 , were returned as "no-good". A th ird check to me, signed by Charles E. Puett in the sum of $2185 (the amount we charged for the pins), dated Jan . 5. 1979 , was also returned as "no-good". We regret all the woes attending the Treasure Hunt but in no way did my company contribute to Puett 's troubles. The price of the pins was clearly and definitely stated to Puett. : I I" E When Ifirst used Lubri-Tech Off-Rood chain lube, 1- fo r the first time in my life - become a fan of a cha in lube.
