Hale was actually catching the tail enders of the 9-11 group from a delayed start! Sa mpson also grabbed off strong seconds in both the 9-11 year old Intermediate Mini classes for a real "good grabber" d a)'o W ith the 18-year·o ld allowance for the motorcycle classes in effect for the second str aigh t year, Barona O aks is seeing increasingly larger fields every race day with the level of competition rising right along with the increase. The outstanding ride of the day was turned in by Suzuki-mounted Mark Howell who completely blasted the large field in the 125cc Modified Intermediate class where Suzuki rider Jeff Almond made a flawless ride for a win over favorite Dean Gurholt and Scott Hamilton. Both the Stock and Modified 100cc Novice . classes were won by riders taking their first trips to the winner's circle, as new motorcycle rider Billy Evans came from behind to catch Donnie Harries for the Stock win and Warren Sleigh t went wire to wire in the Modified class with Harries again the runner up . Old Timers tackle Carlsbad mud By Bob Alloy CARLSBAD, CA. MA R. 18 You can sum up Sunday at Carlsbad in three words: lots of mud. There was mud and then more mud. There was the obvious mud and then there were places where a quick d rop down a hill led up to a sharp left turn and into a lot more mud often with no available escape. A lot of O ld Timers spent a good dea l of their practice time trying to unbog. The Masters division was a 30· ' minute rnoto consisting of 12 laps. Marshall Jennings was out there first and he held the lead for seven laps. "Moving Marv" Ol sen took com mand on lap eig ht and re ally tried to smooth out a lot of those whoop-de -does. This he managed to do and he took first place. J im Belt inck fought h is way into ' seco nd and Jennings raced in for third. Mota two began with Belt in ck taking the lead and he didn't let mud . bumps, or any other Ca rlsb ad obstacle get in his way . He just charged down that track all the way to victory. It was then Olsen with some excellent riding who took second and Blackie Lewis was there to claim the third place. Chuck Woody found the right place in the line and held the lead to win the first rnoto in the Senior Expert category. Don Jensen also knew where to be as he paned the mud and took a good second . In third p lace was Dick Frampton . The second moto was cut to 20 minutes because of a threatening rain condition. Frampton shot out like a rocket and continued on to win the moto as well as th e overall . Jensen worked his way through the pack and earned second place . and Doug Archibald saw his way in there for a nice third place. Bob Crandall was the winning man in the Expert division. Not knowing how to do wrong. he just went in there and took first in moto one and again in moto two and won himself a beautiful trophy. Ed Scheidler also knew just what to do in those tight co rners . and he did some great riding to work his way up into second place in both motes. Dic k Mosley was really in there in mo to two but then he had an encounter with some deep mud and dropped back . O n h is beautiful new Yamaha . Bill Bird . was in there for a beautiful third place in.moto one. and in moto two , it was Norm Elledge who powered in for third place. Top man in Amateurs was Bill Lyons . Bill really looked good as he sped around the track taking the first rnoto and repeating that win in the second moto . Bo b Coffman dominated second place in b oth motos, winning himself a real nice trophy. Joe Bra y claimed third in rnoto one and Leonard Sciacca grabbed third in the second moto. A to ugh man to beat isJames Davis. With some excellent riding. he m ade off with first place in moto one in the Novi ce division . Gene Powell set his Husky for a rough track and nicely zoomed in for second. Dan Harris. moving quick as lightening. - went th rough the ranks and up for thi rd p lace. Then in moto two . our president Da n H ar ris decided he must he he a rd. He rea lly twisted th at gas th ro ttl e tight and powered th rough for the big win . Davis was behind Dan for seco nd .
