Thomas takes DeAnza MX quarter By Ron Lawson SUNNYMEAD, CA, MAR . 25 It was the . last Sunday of the quarterly high point' series at DeAnza Cycle Park and the race for top honors in the regular 34 division7came right down to the wire. While the winners were decided long ago in the Veterans and Mini classes, with Ed and Mike Michetti keeping it all in the family, the race for the big trophy in the regular class was still a four-way dice. The leader until this week was Larry Dimmitt, but an injury forced him to sit the last race out. That left Eddie Michetti, Joey Thomas and Pat T aylor all with a shot at the points lead , depending on how they did in the final round . In the end, it was Thomas on top, winning by virtue of sheer determination. Armed with his Suzuki 125, he entered not only the 125cc Novice class ," but the - 250cc Beginner class just to be safe . At DeAnza. when a club member rides two races in one day, only the highest placing counts for points bu t Thomas wanted that extra insurance. In the 125cc Novice class, Thomas got off to a fourth place start behind John Dimmitt (Larry's brother), Larry Lawrence (Suz) and David DeFluiter (Suz) . He passed DeFluiter on the fourth lap and then got bumped up to second.when Dimmitt dropped out of the race . Lawrence went on to win th e mo to with Thomas seco n d and DeFlu iter third . In th e next round , Thomas ran a perfect race, leading from start to finish . Joe Nist (Suz) held second early in the rac e, but Lawrence soon took over , and th en he. in turn, was passed by Dave Halverson. The final results went Thomas , Lawren ce and Halverson. In the 250cc Beginner class , Thomas' .perform a nce was just as impressive. In spite of being on a small bore, he managed to pull fourth off the line and by the third lap he was secure in second. The lead , however, belonged to fellow high point competitor Pat Taylor (Hon), who kept it all the way to the end. In the next race, it was much the same story with Taylor again taking the win over Thomas. Third place went to John Holsheimer (Yam). When the points were tallied after the races , Thomas, who had gained more points in the 250cc class than the 125cc class, had won by a mere three points over a tie between Taylor and Mich etti. CORONA , CA , MAR. 23 Marty Miller put his Redlands Suzuki /Golden Spectro RM250 . on top of the 250cc Pros for the third week in a row at Corona Raceway. In moto one , it was J erry Raymer (Yam ) who got the holeshot, but he lost it on the second lap when he stalled his machine in between Corona 's infamous stadium jumps. Also suffering malfortune in the early laps was Miller , who slid out in a turn but managed to get right back up . But Ted Hoyt (Yam) was now the man with the lead, and he was moving well enough to keep it. Hoyt stretched his lead for several laps , but at the halfway point, Miller moved into second aft er a battle with Doug Heil and started catching up. But before a maj or battle for the lead erupted, the checkered flag came out, awarding Hoyt with the first moto win . The next time around, Miller got the lead right off the bat and made it certain that he intended to take home the money. Raymer held down second at first , but soon Hoyt took over, setting the positions for the rest of the race . The most exciting sportsman race of the day was in the 250cc Intermediate class where Kinney Jones (Hon) and Todd Schaeffer (Kaw) split wins . Tony Feldhaus (Hon), who just moved up from the Novice class, was the early leader in moto one, but Jones took control on the fourth lap and never let go. Feldhaus went on to second place ahead of Greg Zitterkopf (Mai). Schaeffer and Brandon Baldwin (Suz). The next moto saw Schaeffer get the holeshot , but then go down early in the race . Brian Tolson (Suz) then inherited the lead, but Schaeffer wasn 't about to give up that easy. He remount ed and managed to regain the lead on the white flag lap. Jones also managed to pass the tiring Tolson on the last lap and the overall results were fixed at Jones , Schaeffer, Kenny Guyett (Amx) , Tolson and Randy Wilson (Yam). The I25cc Novice class fell 10 Tom Hodgin (Suz) , making an ideal gift for his 14th birthday. He took the first moto hands down , but had to settle for second in the next round to his parttime brother Richard Hoffman (Suz) , who got fourth in the first race. T aking third in both rnotos was Reed Becker (Yam) and that secured him in third overall behind Hodgin and Hoffman . This was also the second night in a two-race series that started last week to determine the High School champion. For several years in a row , that champion has been North High School , but when the points were tallied this time, it was Norco on top . The two rival teams have been going against each other for several years in the classic tradition of high school competition (only the cheerleaders are absent) but Norco has usually had 10 play the bridesmaid. But thanks to rid ers like Gary Harada (Yam), Alan Coats (Yam) , Alan Seeley (Suz) and Mike Word, all of whom won their classes, Norco pulled off an upset. The final standing had them winning by 19 points in the large school division . In the schools with smaller teams, put in a separate ca tegory, it was Poly High coming out with the most points ahead of Upland , Eldorado , Fontana and Hemet. Results MOTOCROSS MINI BEG: 1.
