around. H owever , neither did Malocco . That 's being a little . too effective. Leon Price , Donnie Morrison and R . Lacey were ne xt through , all within clod-tossing d istance of each othe r. I don 't know what happened to all of those othe rs, but Morrison fought his · wa y to th ird over all, first Amateur. The firs t wom an at th e sta rt was Lori Waters, a position she h eld (as she 'usua lly do es) to th e fini sh. The Novices also went to the shotgun approach to th e sta rt , a ll I could see of some of them were far -off dust trails. This tactic didn't work too well for them . The first two riders at the start , Dan Smith and Brent Needham , were the firs t two at th e fin ish . If Dan rode th e whol e race in the white knuckl e manner 'wit h whic h he passed me, he deserves the Lucky Leprechaun Cold -plated Shamrock for the survival ride of the year! Survival also seemed to be the key to the Beginner race. Of the first four riders to pass my viewpoint ; only Raymond Bowman made it to t he finish and he took first . I hope the others eventually made it around. I maintained my vantage po int for the start of the second lap and saw Eric MacCracken come b y first with a comfortable lead over Mark Zoller and Lee Scheffers. Zoller and Scheffers had their own battle going and , by the time it was resolved in favor of Zoller, MacCracken was ou t of reach . Kenny Upp was a dist ant fourth a t the second lap and was really re aching in to his bag of skills to catch t he leaden . The sta rt of th is seco n d loop m ostl y det ermined the fin ish ing positi on with · one la rge exception . T he m ysteri ou s forces t h a t pla y gam es with t he fortunes of racers and astron a u ts d id a little number on this race and in a surprising reversal of wha t happened in the seco nd race. of th e year, th e to p ' rid er s were hi t wit h a pla gu e of m issed ch ecks a nd su bseq ue nt dis q ua lifica tions. T he tu nnel vision th at is a necessary part of high-risk sport s ca n be ex pe nsive if you don't see a pylo n , a · slal om gate - or a sto p check in a dese rt race . Ask Kenny Upp . That cost him first overa ll ea rlier in th e year an d, in a fin al iro ny , gave him the first overall today. As near as ca n be determinted at th is po int , th e first five r id ers we re Kenn y U pp , Darr en Prirchet , Donn ie Morrison , Grant Colbert and Doug Hurt . I don't need to comment on the need ro - be especially ca re fu l to get those all important ch ecks. I kn ow the pain of riding a long, hard race only to be left off the finishing list entirely because of an avoidable infracti on . One thing that must b e st resse d, however, is the a bsolu te need for common sense at th e finish lin e. I saw one accident happen and two more near m isses because, some rider was going to cu t off another a t th e finish . Unfortunately , each incident occurred after the checkered flag . Maybe a requirement fo r a racing license should be a vision a nd an intelligen ce test l • Results EXPERT OPEN: Dennis Green IVam). e EXPERT 250: Kenny Upp IVam). EXPERT 200: OarrenPritchen (Vam).
