For the experienced enduro riders , the b ig difference would be the elimination of the stiff pe nalty for early arrival at a checkpoint, and in the addition of special speed tests as part of each meet. You 'd have to be bett er prepared . too, because, except for gassing up, outside help is outlawed under reliability tria l rules. W ith no needto keep looking at a clock or computer to keep from running hot , no 'a ve ra ge speed adjustments to make except in how hard to push yourself, you 're able to concentrate 100 percent on riding fast. enough to avoid being late and on getting good scores in the speed tests , and on keeping your bike together to the fini sh . Experts arriving ea rly at a check have time to work on their bikes or to rest. Novices usua lly don't have this time to spare so th ey keep tryi ng to improve their riding so they'll be m ore compet it ive in th e future. Running a whole day at on e speed average with no ea rly penalty , or with only one speed change , the minimum requi red under the ru les for nation al enduros , increases the spread of points between th e winn ers a nd low sco rers if the course is tough enough , yet does not change their relative positions, except for eli minating most ties . When com bi ned with special speed tests , already used in some N ETRA enduros, the need for a tie -breaking emergency check and the luck required to beat a close ' opponent there is el im inated. Under enduro rules the emerge ncy check too often decides th e winner , bu t once in awhile even that doesn 't work when two rid ers chance to arrive on th e same second of th eir m inute and tie th er e , too . Special tests a re a new factor to rid ers wh o've compe ted .o n ly in traditional end u ro . Mostl y they're tra il races against the clock , su pplemented by an accele ra tio n test where noise level is checked at th e sa me time and affects your score. Cutting the schedule to 10 has been suggested by some of , the riders most a ffected. Reducing it to nine meets, three from ea ch AM A region, is more logical , especially when these same runs a re ISDT qualifiers, and each ride r's best five rides are considered in making u p the Six Days team . Combin ing the national enduro a nd th e reli a bility trials schedules into one smaller an d more satisfactory series cuts long-distance travel at a time when fuel is becoming scarce and its use for recre a ti on is increasi ngly questioned.
