Wright . riding fromEI Ch inero to the finish . had to bum gas twice; once from Team Husky. and once from the pit crew of a car entry who mixed some motor oil with straight gas to get him going . Pfeiffer had troub le findi ng a gas pit at one point. which cost hi m some time . Zajic . who rodeIrorn t he start to T res Pozos where Dun ca n would take over -for the finish . has having a steady, troub le-free ride a nd starti ng to m ak e u p. time . on Ma locco and Pfeiffer. Kelly's lead was still strong. even t houg h he encountered m ore front wheel trouble. T he a xle bo lt came off and the front wheel cocked, ca using him to spi ll. Du ct tape and a borrowed cotter key kept him heading for the finish . Ogilvie finished at II :04 a.rn, It was a near-flawless ride for both he and Miller. The on ly thing that slowed them down was when Bru ce stopped a couple of times to adjust the rear brake. The Team Husqvarna people were waiting impatiently for Wallingsford to arrive, and burst into cheers when the sound of a bike coming in was heard only a couple of minutes after Ogilvie. But it was Miller, riding his persona l bike into the finish. When Wallingsford came in . it was too late. The next riders in were Hollenbeck an d J ohnson , and they were followed by Wright , whose jersey was spattered with blood because of a nose bleed following an impact with a branch on the course. ' Ma locco was the next rider to finish a nd he ca me in with no brakes at all an d some hairy tal es of corners late in the race . . W hen Du nca n a rrived, everybody knew that it would be close . Du nc an had crashed twice, b ut sti ll the time he and Zaj ic set was better than that of Ma locco an d Pfeiffer but only by 35 seconds! In fou rth, and just two minutes off th e tim e of seco nd a mi t hird, was the H ond a of J i':t1my J ackson an d Bill Rob ertson . Kelly finished wit h a heal thy lead in Class 20 . not particu larly tired even th ough he 'd ridden the race solo. T he IAbove) Brad Henson. Class 21 co-winner. blasts out of a turn.IBelowl Tom Kelly rode the 239-mile race solo to win Class 20. team of Ra nd y Coulter and Bob Maxwell finished second on a Ma c Douglas Suzuki, with third going to Marv Chapman and Paul Emerson (Suz). George Erl apparently crashed just before check six. but he managed to make it to the check whe re Bill Friant wa~ waiting "'!pr Ted Jones. Friant , hearing that Jones had b roken, agreed to ride the Up -T ire-sponsored Hu sky to the finish . After O King it wit h SCO RE officials, he too k off for the finish . J on es. ho wever, was only out of gas and fin ished la ter, ninth in class. The Full erton Yamaha -spon sored thumper of Lee Hamby and Rich Isbell too k seco nd , 12 mi n u tes off the leader's time. Third went to Da vid Da vidson a nd Jeff Buckm ier on a H usqvarna. Hollenbeck and Ka pla n continued in the Class 38 lead, with no problems other than a gas tank that wouldn't stay down . T hey had nearly 30 minutes on the runner-up team of Marty Reid ner and John "Smokebomb" Gaetz. Peter Smith finished third, riding a Can-Am. • Results CLASS 22: 1.
