10 The top three - Ward, who had passed by Myerscough on the next lap , and Glover - left the rest behind. In their three-way skirmish for the checkered flag, they pulled away and left fourth place for whoever could take it. About 10 minutes into the race, Glover overtook Ward and set his sights on Myerscough. A lap later, he got past and into the lead. The leaders "kept in touch" and paced themselves for the long first moto of the National season. Then just before the two-lap sign came out, Myerscough put the pressure on Glover and got around. Glover returned the favor and repassed the Suzuki rider on the next lap as the two, lap sign came out. Then, with a lap and a half remaining, Ward cut in under Myerscough on an off-camber uphill left hand tum for second place. When the final flag fell , ' Glover had his first moto win, Ward had held second and Myerscough settled for third . Barnett had hustled up 10 fourth in a very impressive recovery ride, and Donnie Cantaloupi took fifth . Rounding out the top 10 were Pat Jacobson , Warren Reid, Danny Turner, David Taylor and Pat Moroney. Randy .H ess proved that his first moto holeshot was no one-time deal as he piloted the DG Performance Suzuki , to a second moto lead followed by Pat Jacobson, Ron Turner on the Luft Yamaha, Broc Glover and David Taylor: But both Hess and Glover ran into problems on the first lap , and when they swept past the flagman for the first time, Ron Turner had the lead with Jeff Ward on his heels and David Taylor in pursuit.ยท Hess was fourth, followed by Myerscough . " I was in second place when I hit th e mudhole, " Broc Glover said later: "T he bike stalled and I got run over, and hit, several times . 1 was 50 seconds back when I got started," But Glover wicked up the Jim Felttuned works Yamaha , and by the end of the third lap he'd moved from 26th at the end of lap one into 10th placel In the meanwhile , Ward had taken over the lead , Myerscough had slipped into second ahead of Turner, and Barnett had moved up from seventh on the opening lap to fourth . On the next time around, he zapped Turner ' for third . The top positions remained the same until just past the halfway sign. Glover was steadily whittling away at his opponents' advantage , making his way through the top 10 toward th e front. At the halfway point he swept around Ron Turner on a turn and moved into fourth behind leader Ward , Myerscough and Barnett. Then Myerscough made his move , getting around .W a rd at a ditch crossing , taking over the lead. Things settled in - if you can call a WFO I25cc National MX "settled" and th e top four places didn't change until near the three-quarter mark when Barnett found a weakness in Ward's defense and took over second place. Two laps later, as the two -lapsremaining sign came out, Glover closed on Ward also and began pressuring the Kawasaki rider: He found a way past on the last lap just making it into third and his tie with Myerscough in series points. It was Myerscough's first National victory, but the young Suzuki rider seemed unusually placid and calm. Perhaps the reality will set in when the bonus check shows up. 250cc National Bob Hannah's trigger finger was a hair quicker than anyone else's - and the works Yamaha probably wasn't lacking any power, either - as "The Hurricane" blasted to the front of the first 250cc National moto with Larry Wosick's Moto-X Fox Honda and Jimmy Weinert's Uni-Trak Kawasaki close behind. Crowd favorite Danny "Magoo" Chandler tangled with another rider at the start: "I hit him hard in the back! I stopped to seeil he ~as OK. The bike loaded up, then seized later in the race, " Magoo explained. He was able to make repairs to the Maico and return for the second race. Meanwhile', Hannah was waltzing the works Yamaha around the course. By the end of lap three, he'd established a six-second lead on Weinert , who'd gotten around Wosick on lap two. Following them were Mike Guerra's Husqvarna, Kent Howerton's . works Suzuki, Marty Tripes' Team Honda, Mark Gregson's LOP Yamaha and Husky rider Mark Robillard. Bob Reis inger's Kawasaki and Jeff Jennings' Suzuki completed the top 10. Two laps later, Hannah had extended his lead to 21 seconds. Tripes had passed Howerton and rode in fifth behind Guerra. He moved into fourth on lap seven . Hannah still held a secure lead, but on lap eight, only one second separated places two through . four: Wosick, Weinert and Tripes. Two laps later, Weinert found a good spot to take out Wosick; Tripes followed suit one lap later: Then Larry Wosick dropped back suddenly. "I hit something - I don't know what - and went right over the barsl" he said later. Wosick recovered to finish fifth in the moto. With three laps remaining in the first moto, Tripes poured it on and got past Weinert. But "The Jammer" wasn't ready to give up, yet . And with only three turns remaining in the moto, he picked his spot, squared the tum - a righthander at the bottomof a Prairie City hill - and stuffed the Kawasaki in under Tripes to take . second place at the checkered flag. Kent Howerton, Larry Wosick, Mike . Guerra, Steve ' Wise, Jeff Jennings , Clark Jones and Carlos Serrano filled the remaining top 10 slots. It was Hannah again, taking the lead at the start of round two. But this time, Marty Tripes was right there in second place and ready to give the Hurricane a fight. Kent Howerton ran third, and he was followed by .La rry Wosick, Jeff Jennings, Steve Wise, Danny Chandler and jimmy Weinert. Hannah and Tripes were puuiitg on a great show; Tripes wedging his front wheel in under Hannah or blasting wide around Hannah at every tum, and Hannah successfully slamming the door in his face repeatedly. Steve Wise was harassing Larry Wosick unmercifully; the two bumped elbows, but Wosick held on . Hannah too was pushing hard , taking it to the step-off point, then pulling it back again miraculously,
