NATIONAL· . . PAPERS • - • I - .... They're getting ready to crank 'em up again at Ascot on March 30. This time the weekly string will go for seven straight Friday ~ights and give all the Exp~rts a chance to get dialedin for the three early season dirt track Nationals at Sacramento, San Jose and Ascot. The weekly . J'fi f events also WIll be qua I iers or the Juniors possibl y to be invited to the Junior Invitationals at the San J ose Mile on May 6 and the same for Ascot on May 12. . ' . . This plan of having JUniors race It out on the half mile for the top 12 spots in recent years has proven to be the best formula for putting on a good race at both plac es. In fact , for the last two years , the Junior winner at San Jose has been decided at the fin ish line . There also are rumors that Ascot will also host a No vice Invitational. at their National: Same .form ula , taking onl y th,; top riders wit h the week- to week points. " We have also been asked .to pass on that for the April - 14 m ile a t Sacram~nto, the Am.bass~dor Inn Motel will offer a .speclal discount to all riders and fans who call to reserve a room , and simply say that you are attending the AMA event. It.gets you a good room at the lowest pnce on the circuit th is season. Call 916 /929 ·5600. The ~est h~s a .new P?tential hotshot In NO~lce Jim Filice.. He traveled to Flonda and ended up by far the most impressive and winningest Novice down there. And t~ere we~e nearly 200 of them launching their raci':lg car~TSI " . Jim halls from the San Jose area . He claims to b e 5'2 " " tall and ~eigh abouts one hundred pounds. I don t believe it, either. But I do believe that he goes fast and has the potential it takes to be the best in the country th is year. The ki~ also has a .firm handsha~e and a smile when tal~lng to the public a~d~he press, something that has been mISSing of late by more than one up and coming rid er. ' Ascot's weekly show . will .fea ru re from a crop of new Experts and a very few of the old . The 16-y~ar:old rule has ~r~uc~d a fast turnover In tal~nt, and It IS Rolng to be hard for an y rid er to stay on top an d go fast to th e ripe old age of 30. "l/t(e int erviewed many riders o~ t~e radio show at Daytona , and It IS amazing how man y, with already proven talent , are not even 20 years old. They have eight, nine and 10 years of some type of ra cing experience _ beh ind th em . One of the most im p ressive teenagers 1 saw at 'Daytona was 19year-old .Randy Mamola. Randy rode well enough in both the Lightweight International and the 200 mile events to win them if he had no t had problems. If there were ever a road racer ready for a factory-ba cked effort, they need to look no furt he r than Randy who I has had J im Doyle behind him all th e way these past seasons . While Filice was standing above th e rest of the No-ices down Sou th , I did not really see any outstanding Junior riders. I saw a lot of good on es but as yet none that looked like th ey could win most of the time aga inst good competition . Of cou rse it is ea rly in the season, but in the pa st , outstanding Juniors have had a habit of winning"from 'the first race of the yea r. Louisiana's Freddie Spencer looked like a cool veteran in his two outings on the road race course but passed up .the dirt this trip . He is a Junior dirt tracker this year and has to start riding to' get the poi~ts to move .into th.e Winston Pro Series on a full time ba SIS next year. Some say that he is as good on dirt as he is bn the pavement- _ I would have to see it to believe it as he is the best rookie on the hard stuff I have ever seen . So, Ascot starts th e 23rd "season of ra cing on Mar. 30. Someday we will compile a list of riders who ha~e st arted there and gone on to Win National rac es and Grand National titles . Who knows? We ma y be seeing more new fu ture champs in th is sevenrac e series coming up . Roxy Rockwood l-o 0.. < / .. ~7) . _\ . . .. . . .. .",,'. .. .. TH RE'S A LOT OF 'EM . I used almost as many cha in lubes as chains. And a lot of them do more harm tha n good. You know what I'm talking about . .. lubes that ~ract everyth ing on the track. LUB I·TECH IS SOMETHING ELSE When Ifirst used lubri-Tech Off-Road cha in lube, 1- for the first time in my life - became a fan of a chai~ lube. I got b.a.ck to .the pits and my chain was free of that gooey build-up so familiar With other brands of chain lubes. WBRI·TECH OFF.ROAD PENETRATES The partof the cha in you see never wears out. It's inside the chain at points of meta l to metal contoct where wear can shorten cha in life.lubri-Tech Off-Road Cha in lube penetrates to where the action is - clean ing out gr it and leaving a layer of amazing "Moly" to minimize wear. HEY, I'M NOT SEWNG CHAIN LUBE I just use the stuff, lots of it. like after I wa~h my ~ike. Ispray on lubri-Tech lT-22, a really good ~olsture displocer to get rid of the water. Then I apply l ubn-Tech ~-Road . Cha in lube. Think about that every nme you buy a cham. Shouldn t you be using the chain lube made for dirt bikes. lubri-Iech doesn 't call it Off-Road for nothinq, SERIOUS NO. 1 T-Shirt. Send $5 and size S, M, L or XL.
