Short and soggy DeAnzaMX By Ron Lawson SUNNYMEAD, CA , MAR. 18 Rain caused the weekly motocross race at DeAnza Cycl e Park to come to an abrupt end last Sunday , but that wasn't until Mark Ellis (Yam ) had proved to his new sponsors at Al Baker /FMF that he can really fly on th e hill y co u rse . Ellis took co n tr ol a t th e start of th e 250cc Expert race wh ich , as usual , was th e bigg est class of th e d ay, a nd led it all the way to th e chec kered fla g . The event was like a ' p a ra de with Ph il T horste nse n (Ho n ) holdi ng second place after passing Ma rk Ba rnes (Yam) ea rly in the ra ce . Fou rth place was, fo r th e enti re 12 la ps , in th e hands of Cl int T a rvin (Hon) , but fift h p lace was up for g rabs be tween J im Small (Ya m) a nd Pet er Mudry (Yam) -with Mudry event ually co mi ng ou t on top. The sta r of the Open Novice class was little Eddie Michetti with his big 450 Maico. This tim e he topped Tim H olcombe (Yam) and Pe te Jonsson handily in th e first moto , but didn't ha ve a cha nce to do it again when th e seco n d round was • called off due to rain. T ha t one rnot o , however , was enough to ' co n vince officials to m ove h im up to Intermediat~.t~.;I:~9'i :r;e,eh 'i ~ • . , I, I ~ I Another class tha t was formed 10 mak e due with onl y one rnoto was th e Open Pro class.
