Starting in two waves three minutes a part , Eddy ro mped on his 250 Yamaha in hot pursuit of Claude Maynard who grabbed the ea rly lead. Maynard crossed it up coming into the wash and took a spill over a dropoff. Eddy stopped to give assi stance bu t Maynard quickly reco vered and Eddy went on before the packed passed him . He kept command of th e lead for th e four 17 mil e loops. No one got nearer D:~~:. e:~~5~!.~H; ?f!?~ ~!!:};_~ft,; ; ~t.o.~i~~ t~~~ ~_~':I_~::_:_::_:;_:;~ ; ; ; ~ 1 Amateur Bill Ca rr had been putting it right up there with th e Experts, d icing with Leon Livingston . T hey came in on the first loop in a dead heat , two minutes off eventual winner Eddy. Open Novice Wayne Cornelius gassed it past Carr and Livingston on the third loop , but they got it back by him before the fin ish . Carr took a spill in front of the photographer and yelled he wanted a picture of that as he took off. Young Don Sea y, Jr. was n oggin' it out with Don Mathews in the 125cc Experts. They had their own race going. Seay pulled Mathews by a half a minute on the first and second loops. Both pitted on the third l oo p and Mathews got out a full minute ahead of Sea y. Sea y was back on his tail when Mathews tangled with another rider, putting him int o the dirt. At this point the bike ga ve it up too . Seay went past but d idn 't know Mathews wa sn 't behind him . He came across the finish full bore for the class win and seventh overall. Kr is Dodge , a 125cc No vice got off pretty hard but righted himself and took off again . Five miles later he blacked out ,' crashing again. Dodge was taken to EI Centro Community Hospi ta l where he was checked and released a few hours lat er wit h a sligh t conc ussion and a headache but everything else intact. Carr fin ished second overall , Livingston took third , a nd Cornelius was fourth . J im Val ov had a tussl e with a ta ll bunch of brush. He ca me in with it coverin him and th e bik e , looking '~'''''~I,AI. .~ , TJ like a movi ng tumbleweed. It was good enough for fifth overall . O n the Feb . 25 results this reporter goofed - 6T was Pat Fla n ag a n 's number last year but now belongs to Jim Ribley who was second in class . Kris Dodge was riding pieplate '11" and I had him for another class when he was a Novice and had actually won the 125cc No vice class. Vic Weeks "AB" pieplate, I transposed to AS.
