Danny Chandler cont inued his
string of hard luck wh en his chain
came off and wrapped around the
sprocket.
Lap five called an end to Larry
Wosick's day, and that of the spectator
who stepped out in front of him.
Jimmy Weinert was running a sol id
fourth p lace behind Kent Howerton
when he crashed. As mechanic Ro y
Turner related later, The Jammer told
him , "I haven't been over the bars like
that in a long time!"
.
Hannah had built up a lead , but he
let it slip away when he stalled the
Yamaha on a hillside . Dirt jammed in
between the brake pedal , and he had
to kick it loose before he could
continue. T ripes took advantage and
closed the gap to two seconds.
At this point the race got pretty
no isy. T ripes' pipe broke completely
in two, and Kent Howerton's sou nded
like it was doing the same thing. Both
retained their positions to finish
seco nd and third behind Hannah.
Rou nding out the top 10 in the final
moto were J e ff Jennings , Mark
Lawrence, Mark Gregson, Clark
Jones, Ron Pom ero y, Steve R hya n and
Boo Stichter.

friend who filed for the same bike.
Immediately the other factory team
managers and riders joined forces and
filed claims, too. A drawing was held
