Once Turner was in control . he quickly began 10 stretch out his lead . but Breker was in this race armed with his 390 Husky and he was coming up from the rear fast . But before Breker became a threat for the lead . the rear Axle on his bike broke in half. topping what had been a terrible day for him . Turner had no "ouble in taking th e win . Williams managsa a second ahead of J im Lowe {Mal} a n d Yamaha's T erry Clark. In round two . Williams came ba ck with his machine in better shape and took the ra ce with ease. Turner got off the line in about fourth and quick ly cut his way into second. but he never did ca tc h Williams. The last moto a nd th e ove ra ll went Will iams. T u rner. Clark and David Hopkins (Suz ). Lowe took l Oth in th e final round. but got fifth place money over Gary Jon es. who was riding one of his rare Open cla ss Arnrnex 's. Hicks made severa l futile allempts 10 regain the lead . but it was evident Rodrigues had master ed his cha nge 10 Kawasaki. Johnson held third . despite the pressure from Michael Knapp . and as th ey crossed th e fin ish . Valdez was in fourth . Pat Galan's Suzuki too the ea rly lead in the first moro of the 105cc Open . with Rick Hemme ( R &D) and Mark . Tomaselli on his tail. Tomaselli threw ms \n~~ in gear and was in the lead by the second lap . It was on the very same lap that th e lead changed hands as Ellis put th e move on Hansen . Ellis . howe ver . was out of th e running for the overall win because of a firs t rnot o crash that put him in 11th place. Hansen mu st hav e known that he had the lOp position . wr apped up and he slowed dovn in th e final part of the race . not wi1ling to take any chances . Ellis finis hed with a good lead over Hansen . Hadley . Miller and Lawrence. T urner had managed to put himself in sixth by the end of the race and that was good enough lor second p lace money ahead of Hadlej , Lawrence and Ellis . The 125cc Pro race was more of the sa me story .•Craig Dale of Suzuki West won by virtue of his 2-2 fin ishings . Mota one saw John O'Mara grab the lead on th e first lap only 10 be pa ssed by Dale aft er a shon time . Bo b Kline . however. was the rider on the move . sta rti ng off in fifth and moving into second by la p fou r. He pressured Da le for qu ite a wh ile befor e he fina lly managed 10 ge t by on th e. 10t h la p . Kline took th e win with Dale right behind followed by O 'Mara . John Silva (Suz) . and J ohn Greenway (H on ). In round two . Dale ' had th e ea rly lead once more but it was Jim Holley (Yam ) who took it awa y from him thi s time . Dale too k second once more whil e Greenwa y . Gregg T oyama (Ya m) and Silva filed in beh ind . Overall it was Dal e . H olley. Gr eenway. Silva and Steve Davis (H on) . In the Open Pro class the race was much more straight forward with Q.avid Williams (Mai) and Turner The second event of th e Ameri can Minicycle Association 's Kawa saki Spring Nationals took place on the well-prepared International co urse a nd sa nd wash a t Indian Dunes. Ent ries topped th e 20 0 mark . gi ving riders a nd spectators a full day of racin g . Dr awin gs were. held for prizes fr om l ta ljet , USA . Suzuki Sports Ce nter of Oxnard a nd Sim i Vall ey Yamaha . The Kawasaki gr een ra n \ -2-3 a fter th e fir st lap of th e 83cc nine 10 l l -year old Stock · Juni ors . Edd ie Hi cks pow er ed in to th e lead and rode a flawl ess race 10 the finish. Scott Brown (Good T im es Kaw) and Johnni e Rod rigu es vied for number two . as th e f ront running trio edged out over their 24 competitors. When Brown ran into trouble ; Suzuki -mounted Lance Johnson and Todd Bess kept the action --. wa}' 117 with all 165 riders taking to th e co urse as if they ha d never been away! W ith .Mother Nat ure cooperat ing j ust a lill ie be tter this year . Speed . wa y 117 Gene ra l M ana g e r a nd Pr esident Don Basile was able to begin tr a ck pre p work mu ch ea rlier than last year . with the result being that a very good course was read y for the MX er s thi s year. The San Diego H igh Sch ool Champi onship Seri es op en ed thi s season as it ha s for the past fouryears - a fte r th e clay had sett led on the first night 's ac tivities. it was defending ch am p Santan a High again on top . gaining three tim es th e points of runner -up Mor se High . and again for the same reason ; only one win . but lots of seconds and thirds.
