Will ard had started as an Indian , dea ler years ago . then took on BSA. They added BMW lo ng after the singles h ad gone out of productio n . Ma rlene was. a former Motor Ma id , and q uite a popular one , too, a nd she liked the littl e single. They bo ugh t it from Al Knapp . then own er of a small BMW / Bu lta co shop in H ighl a nd, NY. Pa pers with the m achin e indicated th at a former owner had been a man na med Hitler . though of course it wasn 't Adolph. Though the m ach ine had low ori~nal miles a nd was in good condition , It was completely stripped down and restored with all original BMW parts, right down to the paint. Many of the parts were no longer ava ilable in this country and ha d to be b rou ght in from Germany - such as the twin seats with luggage rack, which , while not stand a rd , we re available from the factory as an option. Many felt th e solo saddle ' was more comfortable in its day, due to the fact that it was sprung, sort of like a H a rley saddle, and because it was lower. If one m ust nit-pick, th e sidesta nd wh ich has been fitted was not original, and the Continental rib bed tires .a re not original; the standard tires with this mod el were Metzelers with a block and tread pattern. Still . the machine has won first place in the best restored category at a Vintage BMW Clu b rally. Perh a ps the best complim ent on e can pay th e resto ra tion is th a t on th e d a y before t hese photos were ' ta ken . I pointed the machine out m th e new machine lineup at Wolfe's . Cycle Sa les to a well -known form er road racer and former rep for .a loca l firm which sells lugga ge racks and touring seats, among other items. He glanced at it , and said , " O h , is that the new single?" Some of the fea tures of this machine included a rear fender which hinged for wheel removal, th us all owing the fender to extend d own further for more protection; alloy rims: full -width hubs with straight-pull (no hooks at the ends) spokes: three-way adjustable rear shocks with built-in levers; two way adjustable front forks for solo or sidecar use : trip meter on the speedometer: and a sliding cover over the hold for the ignition key . How many of those features does you r new scooter claim? This machine now has 12 .758 original miles on it . a bo ut 1500 since the restoration , including a trip to Maryland . Yet it fits well among the new machines at Wolfe's . Od d ities like th e kickstart, which swings out to the left . the leadi ng-link front forks . and the front brake which uses th e outer cable for actuation instead of the inner cable, or th e now-a lm ost -forgott en cam -type throttle actuation aren't noticed until you loo k closel y. Since the restoration a lot ha s happe ned . Marlene has sold th e bike on ce , but th e purchaser ran into hard times with his bus iness , and she bought it back.
