Spencer NEWMAN, CA, FEB . 17 Brian Thompson once again to pped all comers in the third round of action packed short track racing at Hills Ferry Speed- ~ way. Thompson was one of only two riders left on the front row after two attempted starts resulted in' penalties. When the green finally flew, so did he and his Hayward Yamaha mount - to their second straight runaway victory. Mini bike racing is indeed alive and well with Mac Barnes winning over Steve Ochinang in one combined show while Blane Mapp put some fine moves on Frankie Freitas to win the 80cc Juniors. Chris Carr just couldn't find the right moves to put on Aaron Hill in the 80cc Expert. Hill was the first Jorgy's Suzuki over the line while Tooter Chandler came from the back to take th ird spot and bst place Black Plate points. Chandler tried another come from behind effort in th e 100cc Expert on his Yamaha of Salinas but Vance Sherfield was too much the front runner and had things his own way. In Sportsman action it was Jerry Lanning doing win chores in the l25cc Novice over Ricky Cremona. Danny Moore was the winner in the 125cc Junior on his Cal Cycle Supply special over Doug Garcia and Karl Valdez. Ricky Cremona continues to show a lot of consistency by not winning the 250cc Novice over Kenny Beck. Terry Kitchen once again pulled out the 250cc Junior win with Karl Valdez taking home his second trophy of the night in front of a fast growing pack. The 250cc Experts had to be removed from the track after an altercation left everyth ing in a shambles. The starter quit , and after Ralph Nonella won the 360cc Novice over Rick Moore , the grumblers and moaners lined up one more time onl y to continue their heated discussions about who should start in the back. At the green from Lionel Nunes , Brian Thompson already had it all in the bag. The big KOinllS on behind him saw Mark Key leading the pack and taking second in front of Bill Scott, Kim Jorgensen, and the rest of the crew . Billy seemed a bit perturbed by Key at the end but the Bultaco rider actually did a fine job . John Guy and the SK Bul ta co were the victors in the 360cc Junior class over a distu rbed Joe Knight. After some different starting procedures and problems in the 360cc Expert, the Zakerian's sponsored riders came out 1·2 with Dwayne McCaslin winning out over last week's vict or- John Pittman. . . The 500cc races had to be called in the middle of the Novice show when two riders crashed and a third rode around for three laps wondering what that black stuff was coming out of the bottom of the engine. Even after much work to remove the oil , it was decided to call the show and try again next week. Result s - 80 NOV 100 : 1. M ack Batnes (Yaml: 2. Steve Och inang (Yaml. 80 JR: I . Jannings waltzes to AME Open Pro win By Laura Ricl'!ard SOLID ALUMINUM-CARBON CHROME STREET -44 styles- BAKERSFIELD, CA , FEB . 18 Andy Jannings piloted his Maico to the overall win in die Open Pro class at Sprockets Park to day. In the first moto, as the parade followed Jannings through the first tum , Mike Wickersham (Mai) managed to stay right on his tail and eventually took over the lead when Jannings had to drop back due to bike problems . Starting from the back of the pack, Steve Richard (Ma i) and Wally Koch worked their way through the crowd after getting involved in a pile up at the start line. Koch was able to work up to fourth while Richard had to settle for fifth . The second time around , Jannings again was abl e to take command with Wickersham in second and Koch in th ird. Darin Oliver settled into fourth but a strong ride on the part of Richard enabled him to move his way through the pack to steal Oliver's thunder. Overall honors for the day went to Jannings with Wickersham taking second and third going' to Koch. Mike Brown (Suz) made it look easy with back-to -hack wins in the 125cc Pro class . The overall for the day went to Brown with Doug Nicol (Hon) taking second and third going to Mark Moscrop (Suz). In the 125cc Intermediate race there was quite a duel between Yamaha mounted Mike Yafchad and Suzuki mounted Randy Harden. In the first moto Yafchad was abl e to hold off a strong charge from Harden to take the win . But moto two saw Harden doing a great job of rid ing to hold off Yafchak to take the win and the overall for the day . Second went to Yafchak and third to Jay McDonald (Yam). Damon Webb (Yam) is making a habit of winning in the Open Intermediate class. He garnered backeo-back wins today, with second going to Ron Miller (Yam) and third to Jeff Lindley (Suz). The 250cc Pro class proved to be one of the most exciting races of the day . After some fancy riding on the part of Honda mounted Jeff Stubblefield in moto one, he was ab le to capture the lead and kept it for the first moto win after fighting off some strong competition from Jim Birges (Kaw) and Honda rider Dean Taylor. Stubblefield wasn't as lucky in the second moto. He had to settle for third . Honda mounted Mark Bledsoe was able to take the lead and win with Birges taking second. The overall for the da y went to Birges : with second For th e best selecti on, co nsistent quality and superior appearan ce STE~ ' ...._ ",. 7 RIDE W ITH HANDLEBARS FROM INTER-AM BIKE SUPPLIES, I NC. ~ • 3050 Pullman St. CN-979 Costa Mesa, CA 92626 II~ (714) 557·7941 Se nd 25¢ for catalog w ith s m all decal ($1 w ith lar ge d ecal) So li d a l u minum bars $19 .95 p lus $2.00 ppd .
