Ellis do~s it again at DeAilza MX By Ron Lawson SUNNYMEAD . CA , FEB . 25 Fullerton Yamaha's Mark Ellis is making a regular habit out of walking away with the 250cc Pro money at DeAnza Cycle 42 and the overall win. Lett got the second place money and Toyama went horne with the bronze, AKA third place payback. Chris Chaffee had the most outrageous ~ay he's had had in a~ . Of the 48 laps he raced, he was the leader in all but three of them: gu~ maybe he didn't want to g~t dirt on his bike, Tony Gomez (Hon) was the second place rider on the first lap with Yamaha-mounted Scott Porter filling slot number three. By the end of the lap, Moto-Meister Maico hotshoe Bill J~w~1I had grabbed third . John Greenway (Yam) and Ted Hoyt (TNT) diced it out for the next places. Chaff~ and Gom~z k~pt th~ crowd ch~ring as they r~main~ th~ front runn~rs with Gr~~nway and J~w~1I finishing th~ rac~ b~hind th~m. Th~ second moto was a Tony Goma holohot with Chaff~ smoking to g~t by. As the riders began their uphill assault. Chaffee had the lead with Hoyt moving into the second position during the third lap. Gre enw ay systematically picked off th e rid ers ahead of him until on the last la p he was second to Chaffee. Chaffee , Greenway and Hoyt garnered the major part of the payback. . Open Pro riders were hoping that Chaffee would be a little tired from his previous win but as things would happen, Chris captured the top mon~y in this division too. Ocean Pacific/ Tibblin Racing rider David Gerig scored second overall. Results 100 INT: 1. Scon Hamilton (Yom); 2. Charli a W alker !Yaml . MINI JR: 1. l,1ichael Finders (Suz!; 2. Gormley grabbed the first ho lesh ot and . with Ellis latched right behind , he started to pull aw ay. In third place, Ripley diced with Broten and Ch ris Tarvin (Hon) while Philip Taboada struggled in the back of the pack a ft er his Suzuki stalled on the first lap . Ellis remained in second for several laps before seizing an opportunity for th e lead, H~ immediately opened about a 30 foot lead on Gormley, who then . quickened his pac~ 10 Slay within sight of the leader, The rest of the moto went like a parade until the v~ry last lap when Gormley f~1I in a last -ditch effort to catch Ellis. This moved Ripley into ' second with Broten , Tarvin and Taboada following . In the second match , Gormley was having m~chanical troubl~s and was n~v~r abl~ to chall~ng~ Ellis , who look th~ moto handily . Brot~n was in s~cond and having a hard t im~ with Ripley in th~ ~arl y laps . but soon Ripl~y dropped out , I~aving Taboada to carry on . The ban le lasted until th e 10th lap wh en Taboada finally got b y. but Brot en stil l landed second overall . The 125cc Novice race was a long o ve r d ue win for J~Y Thomas (Suz). wh o has been plagued by bad luck recently. In mote one , Thomas never reall y recover ed from a bad start to take th ird whi le th e usual class winner, John Dimmitt (Yam) took first over Rick Bastwick (Yam) . But Dimmitt ran into trouble in th e second ro u nd . H~ went down whil e trying to pass Br ian Ma yer (Suz) for th e lead and fin ished in fourth.
