barely saved it , but the time he lost in the process was all Staten needed to retake the lead. The race was far from over, and Bauer wasn't about to give up . He trailed in Staten's shadow for several more laps , sticking his front wheel alongside the leader every now and then, just to let the Yamaha employee know he was there. Staten, however, seemed immune to the pressure and he never deviated from his planned lines. Finally, near the last lap, Bauer got tangled up with some lapped riders and he watched his chances for a win disappear as Staten pulled far out of striking distance. When the checkered flag came out it was Staten with a few seconds on Bauer, who was minutes ahead of Hoover, Raymer and Barlow. The Open Pro class was a painful disappointment for Goat Breker (Hus). He pulled the holeshot and opened a fantastic lead in the first few laps , and then set himself a smooth pace for the rest of the race, only to run out of gas on the very last lap. As he pushed his machine off the track, Malcolm Smith's David Williams (Mai) flew past to take the victory. Williams had been putting in a very good ride himself, overcoming the efforts of Winner's Circle rider Jeff Eierstedt (C·A) and Tom Karos (Suz). When they finished, Williams had a good lead over both of them as well as Ken Taylor (Yam), Michael Kordyak (Mai) and Lars Larsson (Hus) . Breker's DNF was typical of the Open class, with nearly half of the field failing to finish . A new San Bernardino Suzuki dealership called Winner's Circle put a good Pro effort into the GP and came out with some hot results led by John Silva. Silva took the lead right off the bat in the 125cc Pro classs and held it all the way to the end. Crown Cycle's Richard Barron (Yam) worked his way up to ,eventu ill1y ,tjlke secopd, Danny Bunt, riding out of Redlands Suzuki got out of the hole very poorly when his Suzuki refused to stan. He was forced to get off and push stan the bike , but he immediately started to make up time , finally getting third place. Fourth was taken by Steve Wiseman (Suz) ahead of Scott Manning (Suz), Andy Orescanin (Suz) and Gary Scheidler, who was the winner of the last Corona GP in the l25cc class. The sportsman finishings are not official yet and won't be until next week, but some riders were obviously a head above the others. One of those riders was Victorville 'Suzuki's Eric McCracken (Hus), who rode in the Open Intermediate class. He got the lead early in his race and started to disappear. The only rider who could match his pace was Cycle World test rider Don Griewe (son of CW test editor Ron Griewe) who was mounted on a big Maico. Griewe cut through the pack and started to close on McCracken, but on the second lap , he broke his chain and pulled off the track. Second place was then inherited by Scott Child (Hus), but he was too far behind McCracken to represent a threat. On the third lap, McCracken had a 67 -seco n d lead and he continued to stretch it out. As the race came into its final laps , Child was still in second and a battle was developing for third between Bill Lustrick (Suz) and Clint Lindburg (Mai). Lindburg came out on top as they crossed the finish line and Leo Green took fifth . In the l25cc Intermediates, Alan Coats (Yam) was the top man in the class, also winning by a good distance. At the start, he was in the backseat to Greg Gracer (Kaw) and Troy Lee , but soon Gracer dropped back and he had only Lee to contend with . For two laps he stayed right with Lee and then Lee also dropped out and from there on in it was all Coats. Finishing in second was Ron Harrison and Guy Campbell, . got third . • lAbovel John Silva led the 12Scc Pros from flag to flag. (Below) After dueling with Steve Bauer.
