W A Feb. 18. 1978 250 PRODUCTION (Continuedfrom page 15) ofthe highest roads in the entire are . The road up to Wheeler Ridge was built in 19!19 to each some Tungsten .claims out near Round Valley Peak. They say the claims were never mined. The other road out to the Wi lderness sign was ' established du ring World War I to service the mines on Morgan Creek. From the sign, the road dropped ~down to Rock Creek Lake, then up Little Lakes Valley, over Morgan Pass to the mines . They have since bu ilt a new paved road up Pine Creek, it's in the next major canyon ,to the south, through the hamlet of Rovana and on .up Pine Cariyon to the junction of Morgan and Pine Creeks . After this it is a private byway on up to the mines. - Once on top and looking east you can see a large lake down in the bowl. Dropping down the steep and very soft track you can pass the lake (no name and no fish) and continue to its east end. ,Take a hard Iook,at this section 's~rti~g aown:'The dust was up to etght Inches deep covering up some . pretty weird rocks . As you cross its occasional outlet the road forks . To the right, it heads north towards Round Valley Peak. We didn't take it as our time was getting short and the temperature was dropping. I'd guess at the top of the ~ ridge it was near 40 degrees and going down . We took the left fork and continued east a short distance to a fantastic view of Round Valley . Off in the distance and 7,000 feet below . there 'ras a nice green sp?~ .on !he TOWn desert called Bisllop. • Suz Yam SWM Bul Vam JUNIOR 1. John Cherm ak Two miles high 11. Suzi Saum Yam SENIOR 3. Bill Mullins A new ORV map for the Inyo National Forest had just been published , and it was very help ful for planning this ride. I also used th e ' regu lar Inyo Forest map along with a couple of USGS topo maps (Mt . Tom and Casa Diablo Mtn. ). Though only 20 miles long, it has to rate pretty high in my ride book. So , take an extra day off, drive a bit farther north and give th is place a try . It would be a fine family ride. Several spots may give mother and the younger kids a problem, but if they have an enduro or two under their belt, it should be OK . Good old dad ca n always bail them out if it gets nasty. You can camp and fish, but if you cross into the Wilderness Area you will need a permit. They are free and can be obtained at the Rock Creek Ranger Station near Tom's Place. All you need is basic backpacking equipment and a little food. All can be carried on the bikes or on your backs. , For a moment , I would like to c!igress , a bit and climb on ' a small Soapboi.· Lsometimes hear and read complaints that there is no place to ride. Bull. The riding possibilities in the Inyo National Forest are almost endless. Private land in general is a no no , as is the W ilderness Area. But if you just use your head, ob ey the few signs, and do a little research, you can put a lot of fantastic miles on your old scoote r. I always do a littl e chec king both with the BLM and the Forest Service and obtain the latest maps. During the last five years I have never been told that I couldn't ride th e area _ .1 ~a l}ted t,? ~xp'l ore. Now I'll g~t off • 10. Ted Ockrassa ' 2. Kerry Dare 50GP 1. Jewel Hendricks 2 .
