Harry's hatchet job Not only was th e 60 Minut es seg · ment on ORVs a ha tchet job , but a few years ago I saw the moderator. Ha rry Reasoner . on a news program on a differe nt station say. " If I had my way . the re wou ldn 't be any motorcycles ." I sent this no te to 60 Minutes : I expected 60 Minutes to be objective on O RVs, not make us look like hoodlums . If anyone wishes to send 60 Minutes t heir comments . the address is as follows: . 60 Minutes si West 52nd St. New York. NY 10009 HERB H ARRIS. R . PH . Owner . Pill Box Drug ' Redon d o Bea ch . CA .: Improve land management As an enviro nme nt a list a nd ORV ent husiast. I was shoc ked and dismayed at th e obvious bias of th e 60 Minutes report aired February. 19, 1979 . When will OR V ac tivity be recogn ized as a legit imate fonn of recreation for the th ou sands of resp on sibl e people in vol ved ? W hen will ou r go vernment gram these people th eir fair sha re of th eir own national land ? In ou r society . with ever-increasing frequen cy. we see th e m a liciou s ac tio ns of a few reflected in the legislative regulations wh ich rule the soci a lly respons ible m ajo rit y. Sadl y. it happens again and again . co nfining and demorali zing ou r citizens. as our free do ms and dreams fa de from our a lrea dy narrowing sigh ts. What is in volved in a ll fostns of . hu m a n endea v~ r is a syste m of exc ha nges. We do . in fa ct . exc hange for humari activity in th e d esert a measure of destruction to that desert a nd th e life within it. What we gain in . that exchange is known to eac h indi vid ua l that finds his or her rel ease from th e intense pressure of urban living in responsible and respectful use of the desert . .For many. without thi s release. life would prove intolerable . The questi on should not be whether or not we ca n use this land, but how to improve the management of it . so that all who wish to use it may do so . THOMAS G. PARHAM San Diego . CA Our side lost After viewing 60 Minut es. I got the feeling we m ade more enemies th an O RVsupporters. T he people opposed to' O R V use of the desert came across like we all were irresponsible. I think the 60 Minutes people tried to show bot h sides. but ours didn't show too well . STEVE KI NGDO N Herm osa Beach . CA Run like a rabbit W hile viewi ng th e recent 60 M inut es telecast on ORVs, I recall ed T hanksgivi ng Da y 1972 wh en m y famil y a nd some friends went riding ou t by Phel an Road nea r Highway 395 . One of the residents ou t there fired on our cam p with a high-powered rifl e. Ne edless to say. we loaded up and left in a hurry. W e contacted th e CHP who co nseq ue ntly a rr ested th e guy. They confiscated handguns a nd rifl es from th e gu y's house along with a sa wed-off sho tgun complete with shoulder hol ster. When a CHP officer asked th e gu nman's little boy if his dad al wa ys shot a t motorcyclists. th e kid sai d. " Mostly he shoots bunny rabbits." That was j ust one of the inc ident s we had with self-st yled vigi la ntes out in the d esert a lt hough some gave us wri tten permission to ride on th eir pr operty. We never rode around ho uses or "chased ra bb its until t heir hearts burst. ". It seem ed to me at t he tim e that th e people in th e desert bus iness com m u n ity enjoyed t he motorcyclists pa tronage and support. Only a few residents seemed to think th e ORVs were ru in ing th e dese rt . If th ey feel that th e des ert is being des troyed. why did they build houses on it ? CHUCKMALOW EI Monte . CA Open letter to 60 Minutes Regarding your presentation on .off roa d vehicles, I always thought 60 Minutes did their homework first and th en reported th e facts . This sho w proved me wrong. It was one of th e most biased anti -ORV pro-en vironm entalist shows.Lhave seen. Rather than buy footage from _a private film producer and simply dub in private opinions with your commentor's voice, why didn't you research the subject matter and really find out what's happening to public lands. not only California but the entire country. . The Bureau of Land Management is attempting to close most public lands to 0 RV activity or restricting public use of those lands to very small areas. The ·rem a ining areas wiII be designated as "W ilderness" with public asscess only by foo t. Your own program counted registered ORVs in the United States at over six million. Assuming one recreation vehicle per family , that represents a lot of people. Has anyone counted backpackers for whom the majority of public land is being set aside for? And for that matter , when was the last time anyone . saw a backpacker in the desert? ORV enthusiasts understand and~ basically agree with being restricted to certain areas and controlled in others for their activities but object to being systematically denied access to all public lands in favor of a few environmentalist backpackers . I would like to see 60 Minutes do a follow -up story on this subject. and this time, do you r own research. I think you will fin d that t he real story is not th e ORV people vs, a few d isgruntled landowners whose statements I feel wer e somewhat unbelievable - but the enviro nm ental ists/BLM land •grab on a nationwide basis whi ch effects everyone . MAR VI N VAN SICKLE Saugus. CA (Desert Knights M .C .) D-371012 And another ... As an off-road enthusiast, I stro ngly resent your (60 Minut es) misrepresen tation of the struggle of private citizens co ncerned abo ut th eir use of public lands aga inst a noth er attempt at gove rnment co nt ro l. presen ta t ion erroneously You r depi cts ORV users as unconcerned barbarians destroying the countryside and its cre at u res and terrorizing the citizens. While I agree that there is a certain irrespo nsib le element in everything even in journalism. it seems - m y impression of ORV people is one of responsib ility and concern for the desert and its inhabitants: humans inclu ded. Your neglect .of the positive aspects of ORV people. (su ch as the desert clean-up party and the various annual even ts which benefit charities. like the U.S . Marine Corps-supported Toys for_ Tots GP) is irresponsible and not consistent with you r past standard of repo rt ing . D.F.SMITH Saugus. CA
