FEB. 18 Morning temperatures that d ropped close to freezing , snow covered mountains and scattered yucca tr ees set th e scene for 30 th e third race of th e four-race · Kawasaki National Minicycle Associa tion Winter Nat ionals. It was the 12 years and over Modified Novice class getting' things off to a busy da y of ra cin g. As th e gate dropped on th e first m ota . it was Lyle McPherson (Suz) and T erry Kn ight (Suz) out of th e hole first: with Si Volkov (Suz) running a close third . McPherson and Knigh t battled for th e '. lead, handlebar to handlebar over every jump and turn and as McPherson sta rted to move ou t, he overshot a berm . putting Knight ou t in front and bumping himself back to third. Now running second. Volkov gaveKnight a run for his money , but he still had McPherson to worry about as th e gap between second and third began to close. Back in the fourth and. fifth place spots were Jack Ro ach (Suz) and Jeff Schaeffer (Kaw) and they had their own contest going. Roach , just barely holding off Schaeffer. could feel Schaeffer breathing down his neck . Meanwhile, Knight was do ing a fine job of holding onto the lead over . Volkov and McPherson for the first mota win. \ It was Volkov , riding for Harry's Cycle Sales. getting the holeshot over Schaeffer and Knight . Schaeffer and Knight battled it out for that second place spot as Volkov continued to hold onto the lead. For three grueling laps Knight tried everything he could think of to get around Schaeffer's " Green Machine ," As Knight finally got his chance to get by Schaeffer, he set his sights on Volkov. With only a lap and a half to go, Knight closed the gap between first and second quickly . and as they made the last turn before th e. checkered nag, Knight cut under Volkov to take the win . Knight took home top honors with a 1·1 finish , Volkov finished second with a 2~2 score a nd Sch aeffer settled for th ird with a score of 4-3. As the first mota of th e 125cc Novice cla ss got underway. it was R&D rider J ohn Hemme (Suz) pulling th e holeshot over Ken Campbell (Yam) and Cindy Dum a (Suz). Campbell an d Duma wer e hot on Hemm e's tail into every turn . As the th ree started to pull away from the rest of the pack , it was a nyone's race.
