" - .. .. ~ '_._._.-.~.- Western hotline CRC Sadd leback 125cc Pro wi ~ner M ike Brown 1 7W) gets t he holeshot, Draskovich, VanHook take CRC Saddleback MX By Keith Cle mons ORANGE, CA , FEB. I I If you're a dyed-in-the-wool moto freak you know that nothing beats a day of perfect weather, full on dirt racing, and perhaps sipping some brew with you r friends in the- California Racing Club. CRC brought together all three of these vital ingredients for a perfect - Sunday and racers and supporters showed up in th e hundreds to take advantage of them . Open Pro Mark Brooks wound his Wheelsmith -sponsored Maico into a first mot o win : Greg Draskovich popped the holeshot and ra n a five la p lead but Brooks took it over on the sixth and Draskovich was second under the flag . Third in was Suzuki rider John Elledge who aced out the Yamaha of Doug Taft, also on the sixth la p . Things got a little more' confusing in the second round as first moto winner Brooks seized after just one lap and didn't finish the race. Draskovich 0I1ce again drove his DMG -prepped Maico through the first turn in th e number one slot but Crown Cycle's joe D. Price moved up from a fifth place start to put the pressure on Draskovich, Price, who had bailed off in the first moto , was making his bid for a win in the second and' keeping the pressure on Dras kovich , He ended up the victor by stealing the number one position in the second to the last lap a nd held it to win. With Brooks out of the race and Price's unfortunate first moto placing . Draskovich was still able to ta ke home first place money. The third person was John Elledge' once again, so he took second overall and third place for the da ywent to Taft. Twen ty-five rid er s m ounted u p for the 250cc Pro race and stampeded th rough the firs t tum like gun-shy cattle . When t he dust set tled "Demon Don " Draz was in th e lead b ut he only held it for two short la ps before Jo e Plante ripped him off. Plante wasn't secure in t he position either and on th e fifth lap Vince Va nHook sliced his way up from a slow start to win the heat. Pla nte ' held onto the number two - position for the remainder of the rac e and Tim Hinse finished th ird. None of the first rnoto 's top three takers were able to hold their positions in the second round , however, and the number two race left the scoresheets with an entirely different set of winning names . This time around Donald Draskovich found his way through the hole first and held a winning run all the way into th e 12th la p . Doug Renno had started sixth bu t was steadily moving up through th e traffic and finally caught Draskovich in th e seventh lap and five ' Ia ps later was able to squeeze by for the win. Draskovich finished number two with Vere Butler racing his Yamaha home third . Overall the positions added up to give VanHook the ' win , Renno second place money and Joe Plante third .
