Montaque took second about 30 seconds back from a 5·2 second overa ll and Dan Mancino (Suz) tallied a 6·3 third overall . The second barn burner came in the second moto of 125cc Pros . The first round was a spread out no dicing affair after the second lap. Erick Thaheld went on his head and Mark Da rby finished well ahead of second place Thaheld . Bill Bu ttram tied up the third SP01. In th e second start . ho wever. Buttram went into the first corner in front follo wed by Darby and T ha he ld . Coming 'ou t of the corner Da rby ha d the lead with T haheld an d Bu tt ram following . Darby pu lled out . about five seconds a head unt il lap six when Thaheld closed to within one bike length. Five times T ha held tried to pass during th e seventh lap b ut it wasn't until the final lap that he slipped by with ju st five co rn ers left in th e race . T h a held landed the lOp spot with Darby taking second and Bu tt ram finishing nine seconds back for third overa ll. The 250cc Experts pro u ced no competit ion at a ll for low flying Jason Lamoreaux . Lamoreaux led both motos from stan to finish and was never cha llenged. Bu t that's JUSt what happened when 160 riders showed up at the Over The Hill Gang's MX . The we\l groomed tr ac k consisted of sandy berms and fifth gear straight· aways. The latter of which may have caused the unusually high number of seized bikes and blown engines. The first insta nce of excitement turned up at the end of the ope n ing 500cc Expert moto . Dick Buttn er (Yam) had taken his holeshot to a 22 second lead and was leisurely coasting when Shawn Hybarger (Mai) closed 10 with in two seconds in two laps . Hybarger passed fifth place finisher Steve Montague (Mai) on the fourth lap and b urned both Darrel Brown (Hon) and Mi ke Cole (Hus) on th e fifth . He caught Bu tt ner wit h only one a nd a ha lf laps to go . Hybarger pu lled a long sid e; Bu ttn er twice but both times Buttner closed the door at the next comer. The race en ded with Buttner in front by the length of his bike. In the second moto again Butt ner powered his YZ400 to a holeshot but this time H ybarger was right behind him . At the end of one. Buttner led by their "No Hair" race held at Plymou th. The day was warm, traction was perfect (damp sand) and rider turnout totaled one of the largest in Distric t-Sf cross country racing. The 125cc class began the program on a 5 .2 mile track that wen t from the nice , wide motocross starting area , bent into a right hander heading into the trees toward the infamous Plymouth " m u d bog, " and then wound and humped its way around to . the ro\ling, oak-covered hills near Dry Creek. There wasn 't much time to sit down before the "sand pit" appeared and the same area that's seen many a Hangtown Classic was used to return to the main check. The course was a n ice combination of fas t , physically demanding sections. : with some high rise jumps that allowed one to sa mple some sparkling Sierra air. . Delno Beck er , n o ne wcom er to going q uick at Plym ou th . -took the 125cc Experts in tow wit h Matt Cullins , the fast Husky rid e r . in second . Joe R eg en d es and Marc Bowm a n were one-two in the Junior class and Bryan Glover took a big Novice win over Tom La Roe, Bu rt Canigan and Art Scott. The 250cc Experts lit off in a tight
