The second loop was a very "b usy" one for the top 20 riders . It was like musica l c ha irs with onl y Ogilvie staying in th e sa me spot. Ogilvi e pulled across th e fin ish on his Yamaha IT 400 in a little over two hours elapsed tim e for th e 40-plus m ile loops . Then th e crowd had to wait for the number two bike. The longer th..ey waited. the more spe cu lation th er e was . finally after four very long minutes, another blue IT with a yellow-shirted rider came in to view. It was Miller, Bru ce's teammate, who had moved up from fifth to the second overall spot, first 250cc Expert. The Da le's Modem Cycle team had proved ' that they deserved a lot of respect as they sat at the finish and wa ited for th e number three rider to take the checkered. It was another five minutes before Amateur Heavyweight Jeff Matthews. who had moved up from . the fourth place slot in th e pits , finished the race. Wri ght proved to everyone that he still had what it takes as he moved up from the sixth spot to fourth at th e finish with Sixberry close behind. Sixberry later had to be towed back to camp as the bike refused to run another inch, The amazing Gary Charters ' continued to stun the crowd as he finis hed first Senior. sixth overall . riding a C bike.: Alexander moved up to the 10th overall slot, taking over the first Expert C bike - position , while Schumaker had to be satisfied with s~ond. . RussJenkins held onto his class lead, finishing 11th overall. . Former Barstow C bike ace Jim Brown has moved back from Arizona an d plans to once again la unch an offensive into the -ra nks of the C class. He finished 23rd overall.this race, and plans to do better next time . The Foster brothers seem to be a duo to be watched, John finished third Expert and Tim earned the first Amateur honors in the C class. In the 40th slot was the first overall Novice. Steve Kaunke , on a 250cc. He had performed very well as he moved up through the Amateur and Expert ranks to finish ahead of many. There were around 300 starters with about a third of them dropping out somewhere along the way.
