lAbove) Jeff Ward ran a strong second before he crashed. (Below ) Marty Tripes showed fine style while running off with his heat race-, that there was no room to pass, passed the Can -Am rider. The three scra pe d pa int right down to th e final turn. DiStefano sta lled his engi ne there, but it was already too late and d idn't matter. Jim Turner ca me in fourth , almost unnoticed . Consolation Pa t J acobsen attempted to pull the slide right out of the carb as he went for the lead. He held it for two laps . but then the bike got away from h im and he crashed. Tony D took over the lea d a nd ra n rig ht to the checkered flag . J aco bsen fell again and fin ished well ba ck. David Taylor again came from back in t he pack to ta ke second. Final Two green m a ch ines led the way int o the first turn . J eff W ard got there first , but T ommy Croft left there first. Smith , Shu ltz , Mosie r and Ha nna h followed. Croft and Ward immediately started opening up a small lead on Smith while Ha n na h took ca re of Mosier on the second lap. Behind Cassin' Ca ylor were Weinert , Bell , Reid and T ripes . Bell , try ing to pass Weinert , cha nge d his line to avoid the Jammer's swapping rear end and hit a rock , crashing. A broken sprocket too th that led to a de -railed chain cost Mike still more time and he wound up 18th. As the race approached its halfway mark. Croft, Ward and Sm ith still led with Hannah moving up to fourth . Following were Shultz , Mos ier , Weine rt , Reid , T ripe s; La Porte, Howerton , DiStefano and Sta ten . Ha n nah passed Smith and started to make u p time on W a rd . But Jeff , who was rid ing his best su percross ride ever , had things go sour . H e missed his brakes going int o a turn a nd cras hed . On the 15th la p , H a nna h ma de his move for the lead. O n the fast back section of th e track, he charged when Croft slowed for a ru t and he came u p with the fro nt spot. Croft cha sed h im as best he cou ld, but H a nnah d idn't want to spend two weeks thi nk ing about being shut out. Passing opportunities were limited said many of the riders, but opportunities or not , there was passing going on . Unfortunately fo r Sh u lt z, it was happening to him. Smith retained thi r d and was sa ndwiched by Ka wasak i riders wit h Wei nert finis hi ng fourt h. Tripes, in fifth , was also sandwiched by green in the form of sixth place Mosier.
