Papa was greatly saddened to hear the Kim Blackseth, a northern California ' professional motocrosser , was injured in a race last weekend and as a result , is paralyzed from the next down . William Robert was born on Feb. 4, weighing j ust over eight pounds, and his father say s " Billy Bob's " first Harley is on orde r for 1998. Congratulations and we hope his father's starting abilities are bred in the bone. Did you know that the 500cc National Motocross Champion lives in Canadian, TX? Neither did Papa, nor does AMA 500cc National Motocross Champion Rick Burgett. But, sure enough , according to The Canadian Record newspaper, 35 year-old Guy Marion won the 500cc National Motocross Championship last week in Van Nuys, CA and earned $32,000 prize money. reportedly put up by Suzuki Corporation and Coca -Cola. He 's also " Outstanding Rider of the year" an honor bestowed upon him in a vote by his fellow profess ional riders. In addition , Mr. Marion, pictured in full Suzuki regalia' sitting on his RM400 , was also named "outstanding competitor" and " best sportsman" by members of the American Motorcycle Association. Marion won his title, in the Van Nuys even t , by winning both motos and averaging 64 mph during his two races . The races, he sa id , were consisted of 45 minutes of riding as hard as you can go , plus four laps in which the rider can show his skill in special ways . Pro MXers will be interested to note that Marion's 1976 earning totalled about $120 ,000. The Canadian Record ran a full page article on Mr . Marion , who Papa nominates as a top contender in another form of competiti on: Texas Tall Tale Tellin'. Maybe they 'll let us run a reprint. You'd have to read it to believe it. ~,t~':'~~q . .. . .. John Savitski and Bob Hannah demonstrated the finer points of supercross technique t o about 700 eager amateur racers who would take to the Kingdome t urf the following day in t he Hi-Point·sponsored Amate ur Sup ercross. Russ Collins called Papa the other day to say that he will not be at the grand opening of Pac ific Coast Sportcycle on Saturday, February 17, as was previously adve rtised. He was never asked to appear and k new nothing about the dea l. All he knows is that he 's goi ng t o be in Cincinnat i at the dealer trade show on that date. On page 36 of th is issue th ere's a story on the Prospe ctor's D·S7 Gold Rush En duro . To make a long story short, Check J was protested because it was a full .1 mile. off in mileag e j ust .8 mile from th e mileage marker. T he D-S7 Competition Committee reviewed th e protest on Thursda y and the check in qu estion was thrown out by a vote of 4· 2. Although no official results were mentioned in the rep ort, the upheld protest will definit ely cha nge the . overall results drastically .
