(I) A = Px l0x M (2) B = 10 x P x M (3) Therefore. A = B According to basic a rithmetic. a series of multipliers have the same result regardless of the order in whi ch they are multiplied , and two qu an tit ies each equal to a t hird ' quantity are equal to each other. As long as we stick to a b st r a c t arithmetical conclusions. these rules are valid: b ut when applied to people. they are not necessarily so. Fo r example. translate the above abstract premises and conclusion into reality by substituting the following concrete form s: P = one Pri vate M = one minute A & B = post ho les You now have the Anny Sergea nt's Pa radox . which states: If one private can d ig a post hole in 10 mi nu tes, 10 pri va tes ca n dig a pos t ho le in one m inu te . We see this is true on ly in the abstra ct . In real life. it ca n't be done . The idea of pu tti ng 10 shovels in the sa me hole a t the sam e tim e is as a bstractedly sound and as concretel y absurd as putting six motorcycl ists in the same car going to the same p lace . It is a lmost as id iotic as pu tti ng two scatterbrai ned . illogical fema les in ch a rge of state and national highway sa fety. W I NSTON BEA UMONT Wrightwood. On J an. 13. 1979 . the Homey Toads Club was interviewed a nd fil med in Sarnbo's parking lot on Higliway 14 and also while caravanni ng on H ighwa y 14 to the Bobca t Enduro. As we understand it fr om the film crew, t hey were attem pti ng to show the family aspect of m otorcycling in the desert ; a nd. fortuna tel y, they we re a ble to get on film 20 or so of our kid s around their bik es in the parking lot.. They inform ed us tha t they had spent the weekend in the desert at a recent Viewfi nders' race and were able to catch on fil m the people participating in that event ; which included all different ages . sizes, and occ upations . The 60 Minutes film crew informed us tha t the segment would be ready for broad ca st some time between midFebruary and mid-March ; and they promised to try to let . us know what date the program will be aired . When we receive this informa tion, we will advise Cycle News so that you can let your readers know in advance. It was our impression that 60 Minutes was going after the BLM. JAMES M. WOLPERT Secretary-Treasurer , The Horney Toads Burbank. CA Cal City closures Please be advised that on J a n . 15. 1979 we received a letter from an attorney advisi ng us that legal action will probably be b rought against our company due to a vehicula r accident resulting in a fa tali ty on Nov . 25, 197 8 during the Cal iforni a Nationa l Road Championship. This event was bei ng sponsored by the American Motor Sports Association. It is rather o bvio us that our corporation cannot expose itself to such law suits even though we are only offering a right of ingress and egress to our property. Accordingly, we are , effective immediately. denying permission for the conduct of any type of racing on properties owned by Great Western Cities. Inc. This moratorium will be in effect until such time as this matter is investigated to determine whether or not we can, without further liability, grant permission of ingress and egress. We will not . during this time. honor requests for permission to hold events on ou r property. It is my understanding that the City of California City may also be sued and furt her, is investigating under what circumstances, if any, that future events might occur. T HEO DO RE B.HA BERMAN Project Manager . Grea t Western Cities, In c. Ca lifornia City, CA Post hole logic 1 suspect NHTSA director Joan Claybrook and CALT RANS director Adrianna Gianturco were appointed by two men with the same thought : "I'll keep the women's lib bers happy by putting this turkey female in charge of some department she can't screw up. like highway safety." Ironically. both men chose women who represent the archtypical scatter b rained . illogical female . T hey put up reasonable fronts, but their rational facades cover disorderly heaps of faulty logic . . Ms . Gianturco's preposterous diamond lane project. which created exclusive lanes for buses and cars with three or more persons, resulted in chaos on the Santa Monica freeway . Before its ignominious defeat, this project proved we a re not ants. a nd three or more persons rarely have the same destin a tion at the same time . Now Ms. Cl aybro ok tells us (in a Road R ider magazin e interview) six riders on six motor cycles use m ore gas than six riders in one car with the sa me destination ; therefore motorcycles are not energy-efficient and should be eliminated. By try ing to use people as ciphers in arithmetic puzzles. Ms. Gianturco and Ms. Cl aybrook come u p with premises and conclusions reminiscent of the Anny Sergea nt's Paradox. which goes like this : Does your mother know you unote this letter, Winston' .. . THE NATIONAL PAPERS Riders come and go over the seasons and lately. with the riders ge tting an earlier start in th e pro ranks. they shou ld stay around longer. Bu t the spotlight is usually on the rider and not on other individuals, or groups that have something to d o wit h the ra ce . Now an official is hanging u p the striped shirt after 20 years of putting races together, seeing that they were run off, and then doing all the things such as rider payoffs. poin ts , etc . , after the engines were turned off and the fans had gone home. T he official who will no longer be arou nd came into the ranks as just a gu y who liked motorcycles. rod e them as a teenager, won a few tro p hies in field meets and scrambles. but ne ver had the u rge to race as a Pro or for money. Most of his early years as an offi cial wer e spent behind t he scenes like so many others . Sign -ups, reco rding time trials . setting u p he a t r aces , lap checking and hel ping to make the purse payoffs. In ot her words . he .was not very visible and seldom if ever in the limeligh t for eit her good or bad. A little over 10 years ago he moved up to d istri ct referee and when the first regiona l re fe ree positions were created, he was im mediately asked to
