CNW -3 I NORTHERN DATELINE red ' came the duo of Mike Kelly and Doug Storey on their 125cc machines . Moving up very fast . as they recovered from horrible starts. wer e 250cc Experts , Ron Dillon , Mark Dowers. and Steve Henry . A tight pack of machines left . the first check together and continued to dice around for most of the first 25 mile loop . Entering the pits for the first time. the arrival order was Dillon , Muller . Stepens, and Kelly . All but Dillon had to stop for gas which allowed him a sizeable lead. Back out for the second loop , Muller, determined to go for the lead , wicked up the throttle which dearly cost him . A few miles later he endoed on a road. breaking his clutch, lever off. Muller wasn't the only rider to have problems. Curt Stepens slowed down with engine trouble and Mark Dowers threw a chain , All of this misfortune put Steve Henry's 250cc Honda in second overall and helped Mike Kelly to maintain third overall on his 125cc Suzuki . Rod Milliron and Golden Wordle moved into fifth and sixth overall. The checkers were amused with Dan Muliers' style. Riding with a mangled bike. after his crash , Muller seemed to get more and more excited . As one checker described it . "H e would come sliding int o the check, kill the mo~or, and swear loudly. Then , after we checked him , he 'd click it into neutral , fire up his bike, and wind it up to about 12 grand while stomping it into gearl" For sheer excitement, the rest of the race couldn't begin to compare with Muller. Dillon extended his lead to finish first overall while Steve Henry put his Honda into second and Mark Dowers made up a whole bunch of time to finish third . Mike Kelly held his little 125cc in fourth and Rod Milliron finished right behind him for first Novice honors of the day , The biggest applause came when poor old Dan Muller, battered and beaten. idled in for sixth overail and pulled off his muddy farmer's overalls to reveal a shiny new set of leathers!
