A twood slipped by Ovellette and was up alongside Draskovich , threatening at every turn to take over. JAN. 7 The New Year's first race at Indian Dunes attracted the resolute riders of the O ver the Hill Gang to a day of motocross with California Racing Club, promoters of the day's events. Lanky Larry Shoemaker, after a lengthy stay away, returned to racing and also to winning. In both of his mOlOS Larry went into that critical first turn ahead of the pack of Expert class riders and showed them the way to the checkered flag for a first overall. Close behind the leader. posing a threat , Roll -Over Rick pressed hard in both motos to finish 2-2 for a well deserved second place. The usual first place finisher in past races , and often an oddsmaker's dilemma . Rathole Rocky was slightly off pace for this near year's opener. Despite a third lap mud problem in moto one, Rock y scored 4·4 to finish a respectable third overall. The Amateurs once again shared the track with the Experts with only the slowest rid ers getting lapped. Runover Ron . being a recent move -up in class . proved he was worthy of it by winning both mOlOS to take a firs t overall . Honky Herb had to overcome his middle-of-th e-pack starts to finish 3-3 for a solid second pla ce. Although Dink y Denny got th e holes hot in moto one, he was out of th e gate slower in moto two and tallied a score of 2-4 for third place . The eighth event of the day had the Intermediates at the starting gate with the Novices who were to follow in the second wave . Ruptured Rusty . another returnee, started his year right by scoring 3-2 in his motos which burst him int o first overall. In lap one in both of his rnotos , Kwik Keith was fifth in line . Keith was quick to work his way up each time to finish in second place overall with a score of 2-3. Varmit Vic shot out of the gate on his hot red Honda and led the pack in moto one to a start -to -finish lead. However, in moto two Vic had mud trouble in tum two and finished ' the day with a score of 1·4 for third place. The Novice class followed the Intermediates off the start line and only a. few riders managed to get lapped. Just Jim worked his way from the middle of the pack in both motos to take first place with a score of 1-3. Nee-Hi Norm , who shows a lot of 'im provem ent each race, also moved up front from the middle to finish 4-I in his motos to take the second place trophy, Alkatraz Al brought up third place followed by Mortar Mike and Beep Beep Bob . CORONA, CA ,JAN. 12 Yamaha's "R ocket Rex" Sta ten was on hand for the year's first race' at Corona Raceway, equipped with a year old YZ400 to do battle in the Open Pro class. But he ran into one problem ; there was no Open Pro class . It was just one of those rare occasions that all the loca l Pros de cided to sign up in the 250cc class instead. It was R.A.C.E . motocross director Ron Crandall, who usually goes way out of his way to help the Experts , who made everybody happy by putting Staten in the 250cc class and offering an extra $50 to anyone that could beat the Rocket. Staten himself was paid a flat rate for each lap he led . Wi th the hot DG /Yamaha team of Steve Bauer and John Greenway also entered it promised to . be an exciting race. When they blasted off for moto one it was Bauer who snagged the lead with Staten right behind. Greenway got off to a middle of the pack start. but was soon in fourth place behind self sponsored Mark Garrison (Hon ). When the group came around for the second lap , Staten was in front with Bauer less than one bikelength away and the rest of the pack falling behind. For the rest of the race, Bauer slowly lost time to Staten and Greenway tried in vain to find a way around Garrison. Round two saw Greenway pull a big lead down the starting chute while Staten and Bauer struggled with traffic . On th e third lap. Staten broke free and elbow ed his way into the lead . .insta n tly opening a sm a ll . but comfortable lead on Greenway. Bauer. spe nt a littl e' tim e behind Garrison . the n m o ved up to c ha llenge Greenwa y. T he two DG rid ers spent most of th e race dici ng. bu t Bau er fina lly took over just before th e white flag ca me out. T he last moto a nd t he ; overall finishing order went Staten. Bauer, G reenway, Garrison and Robert Gray (Yam). Both Greenway and Gray were also riding the 125cc Pro class where they ran into Danny Burtt . Luck seemed to be on Burtt's side in the first moto. While he led the race from beginning to end. Gray was weaving through the pack after jumping the gun and getting caught in Corona's reverse falling gate. Greenway was also making up lost time because of a crash early in the moto. Burtt won the race uncontested but he knew the second moto wouldn't be so easy. Greenway was a distant second ahead of Jim DeGaine '(Yam), Fred Conover (Kaw) and Gray. Burtt pulled another holeshot in round two with Greenway in close tow. The two of then immediately left the rest of the pack far behind. The first few laps saw Burtt slowly pull away from Greenway , but as they reached the halfway point. Burtt's . pace dropped considerably. Two laps later, Greenway sliced past Burtt and took the lead. Greenway took the moto win as well as the overall victory and Burtt coasted in complaining of a loss in power. Later, when Burtt tore down his bike 's top end. he discovered that it had partially seized. Third overall went to DeGaine . The HSMX was taken by Norco High School followed by Poly and North . Norco's wins were cha rac terized by Mik e Word . who entered his Suzuki in both th e 125cc Novice class and th e 175cc Novi ce class. He won both classes . putting his school a leap ahead of the other teams . Another Norco rider that entered two classes was SCOtt Seeley (Suz). Seeley won the 175cc class going away but had to settle for second in the 125cc Senior class behind Mark Dwyer of Arlington.
