Who, what and why about Old.Timers By Robert A lloy Have you noticed a group of motorcycle riders wearing red jerseys that hav e an old man with white whiskers riding an MX cycle stenciled on them a t the vari ous SoCal tracks? They always seem to be laughing and having a good time. Why? And who are these guys? Well. to be one of these great individua ls you must first of all be 40 years old (no e xce p tions - birth certificate or driver's license verification are mandatory). One of our riders is a "spry" 68 and still showing us how . - Second , you must be interested in racing motocross . We accept both experienced and inexperienced riders. And third , you must be willing to ra ce on Sundays. It 's not obligatory to attend every ra ce, but most of our rac es,a re held on Sunday. Exp erience is not a requ irement. We have qu ite a ra nge of rid ing skill. Some Old Timers have many years of racing ex pe rience su ch as Blackie Lewis who has been racing since he was 16 yea rs old a nd is in ou r Master class (highest level). Then too. the re is Ra y Arnold who raced professionally for 10 yea rs. Four yea rs ago Ma rvin Olsen started with little experi ence. and he is now in our Master 's class. There are all stages of ridi ng ability; . ple ase don't let inexperience keep you from joini ng. Our club gives you the opportunity to participate and develop you r abi lity. Even m ore im po rt a nt, you will meet a lot of friendly gu ys, get a lot of good physical a nd mental exercise, and ex pe rience an exciting chall enge . Ma yb e you' ll re cei ve a trophy now and th en . Who joins Old Tim er s? The butcher, th e baker. th e candlestick maker , doctor , lawyer, a nd even an In dia n chief. We have quite a ra nge of occupations . We are far from being stereotype personalities. We live in various areas with som e coming in as far as San Diego. Also we have various charters in northern Cal ifornia . There are over 200 Old T imers. Old Timers are generally in pr etty good physical condition. However , if you are a little awa y from th is. don't worry. Motocrossing is a very physically demanding sp'ort , and after a few even ts you too will be in better condition. We will show you that 40 is no time to be out of top condition. We have many other events other than our weekly Sunday races. W e go to Washington . Oregon , and Mammoth for events held there . There are p icn ics . porlu ck s, our regular meetings and a fabulous Christmas party. There a re four d ivisions in our association . Masters . Experts, Amateurs and Novices. If you are ne w to motocrossing you will probably start in the Novice division . A new member is observed in his first two races and is then assigned a class .according to his experience and ability. So. if you are 40 or over and are interested in racing. come join our top-notch association for a lot of fun and many c ha llengi ng expe riences .
