(Above) Open class winner Rex Staten (30) battles with Billy Grossi through a muddy turn while Randy Losh (49) pursues. (Below) Donnie Cantaloupi (4) takes the lead off the line. which he turned int o a win. Broc Glover (1R). Jeff Ward 171. Brian Myerscough (x10). and Fredrick Preston (6E) start'their chase. three rain - and mud-shortened lO-lap finals wer e Moto-X Fox 's Donnie Cantaloupi on a YZ-125F Yamaha in th e l25cc class , Danny Chandler in the 250cc class with his factory Maico/ProTrac Trailers bike. and T eam Yamaha's Rex Staten with a YZ-400F production bike in Open. Factory team participation was down' somewhat from the previous week's series opener at Saddleback, but each major factory team with the exception of Honda was on hand with at least one rider to keep the privateers honest in their struggle for fame and fortune. MOlO-X Fox pulled off the lOP team award this time, with Canraloupi's l25cc class win , then La rry Wosick and Billy Grossi on their Moto-X Fox b ikes pushing the other two class winners across the finish line of a challenging course designed by hea lin g Nationa l motocross rider Parry Klassen . 125cc Action could hardly be te rm ed d ramat ic as Donnie Ca nt aloupi , after easily ru nning away with h is qu al ifying moto ea rlier in the day, came back to pull the holesh ot with his Chu ck Tannlund-prepped Fox Yamaha and ru n away with the feature race all the way to the finis h . The week before at Saddleback , Donn ie ' experienced a smashed ex pansion chamber on the o~nin~ la p ~hic~ ~ad I~f~ hi~ PI1~ of conten tion and the resu lts. - John O'Mara had tailed Canraloupi off th e start in second place, but dropped his Suz uki on the second lap allowing National Champ Broc Glover 10 take over with his works Yamaha , closely pursued by Team Suzuki's Brian Myerscough and Kawasaki's Jeff Ward . Myerscough was running really hot with his RA works bike and blew by Broc on the third lap 10 claim second place behind Donnie. At the m id -race mark, Brian narrowed Donnie's lead down to some 8 seconds. but then Donnie opened it back up to take the win by a 30-second margin at the finish . Glover, meanwhile , had to retire at lap five with a broken rear chain which allowed Ward on the KX -125 into third. 250cc Da nny " Magoo" Chandl er easi ly looked the quickest during the morning's practice sessio n a nd q ualifying, where he h ad to come b ack and win his consolation m ot o after d rowning out his Pro-Trac Maico whil e runnin g away wit h the lea d in his initial qualifying race . After that it was easy as Magoo led th e downhill flag start a nd began to disappea r in the feature race. . Rex Sta ten, ridi ng two classes, had his stock YZ-25 0F in second for only a lap then La rry Wos ick b lew by the "Rocket" with his Moto -X Fox Honda. ~ was , .. From 16e third lap on; tJ!e race follow -the-Ieader as Wosick couldn't catch Magoo and Staten couldn't reel back in on Wosick. Only a little further back , behind Kevin Phillips on a Yamaha running fourth position the entire race. was there any passing at all in a small battle between Husky's Goat Breker, Moto-X Fox 's Jim Turner on a trick prototype CR Honda and previous week 's sensation Lenny Giger who had to recover from a first tum crash at the start. 500cc The only really ' exciting race occurred in the O pe n class as Maicomounted R and y Losh splashed his way . out front at the start ahead of Rex Staten and Goat Breker , both in their second race of the day . Losh held his lea d for five laps, but then got shook when he caught a glimpse of Rex closing on him from behind. R a ndy dropped his bike in an easy turn and Rex took the lea d. Charging u p th rough the p ack after a near-last-place start, Billy "Sugar Bea r" Gross i ha d his Moto -X Fox 450cc Mai co burnin g u p t he tra ck wit h a cha rge reminiscent of his old d a ys with Team Su zuki . Matter of fact, the Bea r was looking bett er th an ever as he caught up wit h Rex on the sixth lap. For the last fou r laps they fought, Billy looking for every wa y possib le around Rex as he oversho t turns and tore down course ribbons in attempu to get by the Yamaha facto rid er. Both riders were tired and ragged - Rex from having to race two classes and Billy because he wasn't really in as good shape as Rex. The moto ended with R ex leading Billy across the finish line by a matter of fact. Randy Losh held off Breker for third, followed by David Williams and Eri c McKenna on Maicos. Despite the weekend's miserable weather. the CMC pulled off a pretty well organized event. Next weekend the Suzuki Golden State Series returns down south for the third round to be held at Indian Dunes. More of the factory riders should be back out to battle since the race- is closer to home for them . and most want to test out their new works bikes before the following weekend's first AMA Su percross event in Oakland Stadium. Expected to be making his first official race a ppearance with Team Suzuki will be Darrell Shu ltz. • Results 125cc: 1. Donnie C8ntaloup i (Yam); 2. Brilln\ Mverscough (Suzl; 3. Jeff Ward IKaw'; 4.
