Dave rode the " Ice Race" on a super tri ck KT M with sheet metal screws threaded into the tire as studs. Dave proclaimed his studded Metzelers a sound success on the slick sections of trail. Many riders found thei r way off the trail on slippery down hills, by way of frozen roots. rocks , logs and ruts . Especially in the mine shaft area, a steep , winding section blocked by a large log. Everyone was going for the $25 overall prize as if their next meal depended on it. This event consisted of 21 laps over a th ree mile course, or 63 miles overa ll. . Alex Jorgensen, riding for JO!gy's Suzuki in Stockton, took h is Ca n -Am to a fast lead, but on t he second la p J orgy lost a clamp on his carbu retor and it was a ll over for him . Magnum Mitch took over the lead for the next 14 laps u nt il Big W ayne Morre ll sh uffled by for a short one lap. Over the dyke Morrell met a mud hole and down he went. Mitch took back the lead a nd held it for the overall win . The Open class saw fast flat track ace Skip Aksland on the big 500 IT really moving up. On the second lap Wayne Morrell did a ass-over-teakettle get off about 50 mph down the new hill section. It only slowed him long enough to dust himself off and he came back to charge ha rd after Lenz. Morrell rode hard the whole race while Skipper just kept closing in . The last lap saw a duel to the finish with flat tracker Skip putting it to rnotocrosser Wayne. Third in the Open class went to the fence and hay man Frank R isne r . Risn er was really cooking, and at one time was even leading, bu t the competition was too ro ugh and Frank settled for third . Kim ala~kseth had headed to Sears Point but after waiting in line for a n hour he rushed to Sa nd Hill for some good riding and second in the 25 0cc div isio n. Pe ter Bierwit h too k his Maico to thi rd in that class. The 125cc class belon ged to another Aks land. C h u ck took his 12 5c c Yamaha to a win in that class after rid ing th e two ho u rs a lone. Rob Robison rode ha rd for second. Terry Seamon dialed on the small turn-out in the 100cc class .
