Ife got away third in moto two , behind Forrest Hayashi (Suz ) and Mike Paulino (Suz). Paulino succ umbed to his charge and by th e last lap , Hayashi felt Green 's pr esen ce th ough ' he held position , Considering that racing didn't get started until a ft..r II a .m . due to problems related 10 all of that mud everywhere , it was. a m a zing that th e last motes didn't have to be run in total darkness. Gibson, Staten, Myerscough win atSSMMX By Terry Whytal ORANGE, CA , DEC. 30 A large turnout of P ro riders brought the year to an exciting finish with some of the closest racing eve r seen at Saturday Saddleback Motocross. Leading off the d ay 's ra ces were th e Open Pro riders headed by Mai co mounted Jeff Jennings and Jim Gibson riding Scott Gillman 's spare big bore ma chine. J ennings quickly jumped to th e lead at the sta rt of the fir st moto with Gibson close behind , Husky rider Goat Breker follow ed in th ird and Tim Tolar put his Suzuki into fourth . On the third lap Jenni ng s bobbled and lost four places before recovering . Jennings go t around Tol ar a nd set off after Breker and Gibson , wh o by this time had o pe ned up some breathing room on the pack. Halway through the moto Gibson a nd Br eker tangl ed and fell, letting J enn in gs regain the lead . Gib son held onto second but Breker re -entered th e tr ack down a lap . Jennings went on to fini sh fir st ahead of Gibson and Tolar. Moto two was an all Jennings and Gibson show. as the two riders pulled far ahead of th e pack while fier cely battling each other. Gibson pulled th e holeshot and Jennings glued himself to the Suzuki 's fender. On the 10th lap Jennings grabbed th e lead only to lose it again on the next lap as Gibson show ed ' why he 's suc h a promising you ng . rider - determination. With j ust three laps remaining Gibson twist ed an alread y inj u red ankl e a llowing Jen nings to take the .lea d on ce mo re . Then, incredibly, the big bore Ma ico ran dry of gas lea ving Jennings with a long push back to the pit s. Gibson went on to take th e checkered flag and cla im th e overall vic to ry. Bob Marino was next to cross the finish lin e aboard his 400 Yamaha and with a fourth place fin ish in th e fir st ra ce Marino took home th e second overall money, Keith Dysert (H us) finished th ird overall with a 6·3 score . Pre -race favorites in th e ,250cc Pro class were T eam Su zuki 's SCOlt Gillman and T eam Yamaha's "Rocket Rex" Staten. It di d n't tak e long to see why these boys are factory riders as they qu ickly motored a way from th e rest of the field with Staten taki!'g th e lead position. Gillma n t ried , lap aft er ' lap , to pass St at en by taking radical lin es through all th e turns but Staten 's expe rie n ce from the Nationals showed as he effectively block ed eac h attempt. Fin ally Gillman passed Staten in m id ai r off a jum p, flying nearl y over the Ya m aha rider and then proceeded to run aw ay wit h the win o pening up a 20 'second lead by the finish . Staten was seco nd a nd third went to Mark Lawren ce on a Yam aha . Gillman . pulled the ho lesho t in th e seco nd mot o , follow ed by Staten and Da vid T a ylor ri di ng a Yama h a . Gillman was rid in g wi th incredible smoot h ness as he bega n pulling awa y from Staten at a lmost th ree seconds a lap. Then suddenly, halfw ay throu gh the moto, Gillman went into 'som e deep ruts at high speed , got ou t of sha pe , d id four tank sla p pers and unloaded . Gillman remounted quickl y but retired wisel y with a sri cking th rottle and badly bruised shoulder. With Gillman ou t, Staten ea sily cruised to the win and overall victory . Sec ond overa ll went to Mark Lawrence with a 3·2 score and Dav id Taylor was third ,4 ·3 .
