Sonny Ken yon . who was there stumping for Louis McKey, was the first to drop a 20 dollar bill in the kitty that would go to the Phantom Duck's Attack Fund. He urged others to follow suit with the advice that how the Duck rides , so goes the rest of the nation . This large . and peaceful gathering overlooking th e San Fr a ncisco Ba y should inspire others in bringing about a pos itive, progressive \979 . . DEC . 3\ For more than a week a dense b la nket of fog h ung over the Sacra mentoValley . As 350 riders converged on Sacramento's Prairie . City Off-Highway Vehicle Pa rk it looked like it wou ld be more of the same. And, for the first three races of the day specta tors were lu cky 10 see a '30-ya rd stretch of the track clea rly . Suddenly, midway into the first \25cc Pro rnoto, the sun broke throug h and prevai led for the rest of the racing day . Sevent y Pro riders showed u p for No-Name Pro mo tion 's CM C race . a nd it was Larry Wosick, Da nny Cha ndler and J im Lesniewski ta king home some New Year's eve spending money . The \25cc Pros we re first off the line . Larry wosick (Suz ) and Donn ie Cantaloupi (Yam) were both wearing the number one and combined with the fog it was almost impossible 10 tell who was who. Canraloupi jumy'~!,i,ou t in front early in the moto : with Wosick trailing right behind. Cloyse Holland , Jr. had rammed his Suzuki to th e holeshot , but hard-riding Cantaloupi flew .past him early in the first lap whil e Wosick followed with Michael Preston (Suz) ' hot on his ta il. Cantaloupi and Wosick , both wearing their familiar MOIO ·X ·Fox jerseys, battled for the next severa l la ps with Canta loupi eventually gai ning a six second lead at the white flag . Preston held a solid third for the du ration, but Ho lland succ umbed to Da na Wa xham late in the race as Wa xh am moved 10 fourt h . . The moto ended with Ca nta lou p i, Wosick , P reston and Wax ham u p front . The following moto saw Ke n t Woods (Suz) out front with Wosick second. Canta loupi was six th but as the riders came around the back stretch of the track Do n n ie was noticeab ly absent . By now Wosick had closed on Woods and he grabbed the lead shortly thereafter. Cantaloupi showed up in last place , the victim of a flying rock that had jammed his brake and ca used him a two minute delay. The third lap found Wosick in front followed by Waxham . Woods and Michael Preston , Wosick continued 10 pour it on and took his Suzuki 10 a first place finish and first overall honors for the day. Woods pulled in second in the moro with Preston thi rd .' In 250cc Pro action Danny "Magoo" C handler took the overall p rize for the day after two ha rd-riding first place finishes . Vacavi lle's Da ve Wood powered his Yamaha to the holeshot in rnoto one but Chandler was screaming a nd by the end of the first lap Danny had tacked down the lead . ' Wosick moved up 10 second wit h Anti och 's Bob Myer s (Mai) in third and W ood followed in fourt h . The foursome held their positions for one la p u nt il Cantaloupi bumped Wood 10 ta ke fourth . At the finish it was Chandler , well out in front , followed by Wosick , . Myers and Canta loupi . Round. two of the 250cc Pros ; . belonged 10 Cha ndl er , an d once agam Danny had . to contend with ~ a rl y leader Wood . As the riders entered la p two it was Chandler leading with Myers , Wood , and Reno-ace Allen BerIuti in fourth. For the rest of the rnoto Chandler didn't let anyone near him. although Myers gave it a good shot. At the finish it was Chandler winning by five seconds with Myers and Berluti second and third. R a n d y Losh (Mai) and J im Lesniewski (Mai) provided some New Year's fireworks in Open Pro action . Losh g rabbed a n early lea d , with Lesniewsk i pester ing him un t il an airborne roc k stu nned him late in th e moto and dropped him several seconds off the pace . Berlu ri , who had gotten off to a second p la ce slot ea rly in t he race , had a variety of bike problems and did n 't finish . After Be rlu ri's demise , it was Losh and Lesniewski well out in front. Ron Tebbs (Hus) and Jerome Heiberger (Mai) had an intense b a tt le going for thi rd place , with Heiberger eventually winning, As they crossed the finish line it was Losh, Lesniewski. Heiberger and Tebbs, In rnoto two Losh led early in the moro with Lesniewski . Ber lu ti and Heiberger tai ling . But this time Lesniewski was too much for Losh, with Lesniewski taking over midway through the rnoto', Berlu ri, who had nailed down third . was again plagued with mecha nical problems that finally fo rced him to drop out. J ust as darkness began to vset in. Lesniewski finished first ; followed only moments later by Los h a nd Heiberger. Lesn iewski, wit h his 2·\ finishes for the. d ay. too k th e ove ra ll money. In perhaps t he m ost exciting event of t he d a y, Dean Shul tz, Da r re ll Shu ltz's younger brother, batt led with Liverm ore's J oe McCrum m in (Hon) during 250cc Intermed iate ac tion tha t led up 10 an almost photo fin ish in the first rnoto. Sh ultz ha d held his Maico in fi rst place th rough m ost of the moto , with Mc Crummi n grab bing second midway in the race . Then it was McCrummin vs. Shultz in a wild . neck and neck battle that grew more intense as .the race progressed. Going into the last lap it was .Shul tz in front Husqvarna Sales. Service.
