Timers race was quite an event with O ld Timers' Ra y Ne lson in first and E.C. McVey (Ma i) in second. Not to be held off fo r long and coming from the back row , was Veter an Dick Turner (Ya m) . T'urner got under McVey on the th ird lap at the jump. and on the fifth lap Turner overtook Nelson and led it to the fin ish . Turner was' first Vetera n and Nelson was first Old T imer. The weather was perfect for the Desert Raid-: ers' 75 · mile, two -man, team -ra ce. After giving the riders time for severa l customary bom b runs , t he Raiders orde red all 50 tea ms to put their bikes on the sta rti ng line. Everyone was nervous and j u m py at the riders' meeting, and righ tly so; with . a big shout , the ra ce was started. This early, and rather unorthodox sta rt left many unfortunate riders without helmets on . or worse yet, in the portaca n, Loc al rid er Larry Grossbeck pulled out an un believa ble holesh ot , but as he stopped at the first check to wait for his partner , t he team of Ron Dillon a nd Edsel Sta llings went by . Tucked right in behi nd the pair of 250cc' Yammies we re Kr is Morga n and Preston Gerber, both from Utah a nd both mo unted on 390cc H uskies . The two teams sta yed toge the r for the firs t la p . with all four riders in sigh t of each other. Back in the . dust , crashing was taking its toll .•T he leading 200cc team of Lou Greg ory and Ch ip Young. endoed fiercel y. The Open team of Henry Reimann and Marty Bengston cr ashed as well, losing som e positions. About m idway through the second lap. whil e holding a slight lead. the team of Preston Gerber and Kr is Morgan lost the course. Although they rode hard . th e time lost was too great. and Ron Dillon and Edsel Stallings zipped ba ck into the lead , ne ver to be challenged again . As th ey came into the fin ish , it was Dillon a nd Stall in gs . followed b y Gerber and Morgan. Third was the Open team of Ed Hickman and Terry Berg. In fifth overall. and firs t old duffer's, Don Hulme and Doug Maude zipped in ; and leading the 200cc 'class wit h sevent h overa ll, were Dave Cu rl and Mike Kelly, on their screa m ing yellow Suzukis. NOV . 19 After months of n o moisture , Sa turday night it started .snowing and by morning fou r inc hes of the wh ite st uff was on the ground. Now, on e mi gh t th ink t hat fou r inc hes of snow would cu t d own on th e du st. It d id . but' not entirely . There was six inc hes of du st Sa tu rday a nd th is was a very d ry ' sno w. T he ~o u rse turned ou t to be very dusty and san dy . Only 72 riders signe d up . More rider s were th ere , b ut th ey decl ined to ride. Everyone t hat elect ed to ride seeme d to ha ve a goo d time. T he Cascade M/C of Ben d , OR sponsored this event , held 26 miles sout hwest of . Prineville, O regon. O rigina lly a 25 mi le course.was laid " ou t, b ut d ue to a "gu n wavi ng land ca re ta ker ," the course had to be re o rou ted . Th is was do ne Sunday m orning a nd it was agreed th a t to sho rten the course was the best alter nativ e. The club en ded up with a n 18 m ile course. Due to the incleme nt weather, th e riders were asked a t th e riders mee ting if they wa nted to ride t hr ee or four la ps - four la ps won by a big margin . So th e "J un iper 100" becam e the 'J u nipe r 72". T he cou rse was very sa ndy in most places. T hose riders th at d id not get a cha nce to ride a pra ctice lap were qu ite su rp rised to fin d th e cou rse going up a creek bed , com plete with wat er , mud, an d ice. Local ride r Mark Dowers put his Husky into a n early lead and after ta king comm a nd he just coasted. Joe McCormick was close behind . riding a 175cc IT, and may have given Dowers a race if he hadn't lost one foot peg on the first lap. T hese two riders fin ished one , two , with th ird overall going to . Edsel Stallings of Na m pa , ID , rid ing a 250cc Yamaha YZ. Another Idaho rid er , Hen ry . Reim a n , was first Amateur across the fin ish line an d pushed his 250cc Yam aha to 10th overa ll. Not bad whe n you co nsider the Amateurs sta rted a bo ut five m inutes behind the Exp erts. Audie McCombs drove all the wa y up from Alturas , CA , to tak e home first 125cc Amateur. W ayne Linville of Bend , OR usually rides th e 250cc Amateur class, but moved up to the Open class and won it. If he keep s riding like this he ma y be moved up to Expert . This event was th e last point s race of 1978 . A sta tewide organization , th e O regon Motorcycle Riders Associati on is keep ing tr a ck of po in .. and will issue number plates for 1979.
