i NORTHERN DATELINE ~ Cycleland rough E scrambles: Oh, that seventh lap By She ila Turner . o P'""'4 CHICO, CA, DEC . 3 Cycleland's rough scrambles got underway with 70 rough and re ady scramblers goin' for it. . The 80cc Mini division saw Dave Azevedo getting off the line first with Ricky Carrel following closely . Carrel went down on the seventh lap, giving second to Tommy Owens. jeff Valentine took the lead from the start in the lOOcc Mini class. Dennis Archuletta hel d second off the start, but was passed by Brent Cash on the third lap . Bu t when Cash lost his chain on the seventh lap , Archuletta was th ereto regain second. Nonal Church got off the line first in the 125cc Novice class , and closely pursued by Robert Smallwood . Church held off Smallwood's attempts at the lead and they finished in that order. With Ken Wolcott out in the lead in the 250cc Novice race, it was a battle for second and third. Mike Crumm held off Bob Carrol until th e seventh lap when Carrol finally took over the runner-up spot. Crumm held third to the flag . In the 250cc junior/Expert event , Mike McAvoy started in the back row , but blasted through the pack to take the lead by the first tum, where he stayed. Spencer LOD! , CA , DEC. 3 Cross country racers , scramblers, short trackers and some good Pros came out for a d ay of fun and dirt clod ba ttles on a 52 great mile-long track at the famous Lodi Cycle Bowl, just off Hwy. 99 in the SanJoaquin Valley. , Mini kids were the first order of the day with Tiny Petit the winner after completing 50 laps. j ust ahead of Aaron Hill with 49 . First Novice went to Allen Owing and Billy Brooks got a lap on Scott Lundsford; that was the trophy count for the little gu ys. Lightweights were most abundant in the 125-200cc class along with a lot of minis involved with maxi type kids riding . Marthoner Bob Friedland led the parade for a few laps until Clo yse Holland came from fifth to take the lead on the sixth lap . He held it to the end of the one and one-ha lf hours , for 57 laps with cross country rac er Steve Ferroni fini shing second overall on an IT 175 . One lap back a third Exp ert . Larry Hannah , was on an XL Honda from the joe Herb Honda stables of Merce~ . At this point the count on back IS d ifferent from what was posted by the scorers which makes marathon racing a madness. It is extremely hard to score a whole race with some 40 starters and give a total breakdown of each rider at the end of the race. But it 's been done before and will have to be continued if long distance, closed cou rse racing is to survi ve. In the battle out front , Holland held on with comparat ive ease , only changing riders once. When he found that's what was allowing Ferroni to catch up, he quickly remounted the jorgy Suzuki and kept his distance from the IT. . Mike jennings led the early stages of the 250cc event but Alex jorgensen was his usual overpowering self and led the substantial portion for a big win over the MX rider. From lap eight to lap 57 j o rgy's Ca n -Am whispered quietly 10 the overall. jennings, the next rider, was one full la p down and third went to Alex's litt le friend, Tracy Hays , who was some three laps in arrears to Alex . Tracy showed a lot of style and race ' wiseness in lasting th e one and one-ha lf hours on his own . Brad Summers is another of the you ng lions getting ready to jump on the Pro tour in the year to come. With only one trophy up front for the Experts. fourth overall d idn't seem too exciting but it was certai nly a game effort. joe Knight and Billy Arbogast finished 52 and 51 laps , taking first junior and first Novice respect ively, while staying very close togethe r throughout the time period. A veritable potpourri of Open class machinery brought ou t e ve ry imaginable . st yle and size in th e catchall class. It was Al McGeh ee on R a nd y Thompson's KTM leading after one lap and th e scrambles Expert ran a tough line just in front of Craig Scroggins for 15 laps until AI handed over the reins to the Novice rider. Scroggins led the major part of the one and one-half hours on an MX -Fox Yamaha. Dave Busby tried to hold a close count on the two lea ders bu t on the thi~d lap he slid off the first corner and dropped back, allowing the Winton Cycle Suzuki of Tim Adams to take third over Ron Knight , Mark Key, Steve Bra nd t and Brian Thompson . All were very close for the opening laps . . Brandt and the very tr ick Concord Yamaha TT 500 moved right up to third until lap II when a head gasket blew out, just like at the Baj a . Then Scott Link , on a real new Maico, took third until he had a run in with Scroggins and fell . bending his bars the wrong way. just 15 la ps int o the race the front seven sta rt ed lapping slower riders with Scroggins nearly alone at the helm. Thompson was th e onl y close runner. At 21 laps. Scorggins had lapped through to fifth with Thompson still in sight and Steve Fern:ini just over Ron Knight. Al McGehee had gone back to work and moved to fifth and it looked like old marathon madness home week with Gary Trammell cha nging bikes as fast as an yone wanted 10 pit . It 's easy to give up you r scoot when you're tired and th e gu y smil ing down ~>n you is 6 ft. 9" and 280 Ibs. worth of first string tackle. AI finally got by Adams' DR 370 just about th e time the spokes ga ve up . Knight slip ped off th e lap pa ce and Larry Young moved up along with th e Wright boys, whichever of the three was rid ing. jim Mahoney had te amed with yo u ng Bob Cunnington and wer e doing well at ninth place with Bobby's mom judy doing all the cheering. Ii just past the halfway mark Scroggins was over half a lap ahead of the Hayward Yamaha TT 500 of Thompson's and the XL 350 of Kiser Bros. fame. Steve Ferroni . Steve was riding his second class all by himself. Cunnington moved up to fifth behind McGehee who cha nged off one more time. But when Mahoney and his top flight Volkswagen crew made the change they revers ed to finish about sixth . The pace began to tell the tale in the last 40 m inutes as Ferroni put on the pressure just before 50 laps. He passed Thompson on lap 42 and moved by Scroggins on lap 48 . Craig appeared to be a bit tired when he started doing wheelies off some corners but not enough to let Thompson' get any closer. Brian was happy at doing this well and with 57 laps completed the checkered was thrown a t Scroggins. If that doesn't made sense , it's because he was the first one around at one and one-ha lf hours . When Fer roni came around to take th e ' checke red, he owned 58 laps but th e confusion ran rampant from there and may never be satisfied . That 's wha t makes Marathon Madness. Cantaloupi devastates Pro classes at Prairie CityCMCMX By Chuck Woodbury SACRAMENTO . CA . NOV . 26 Donnie Cantaloupi and Jim Lesniewski dominated Pro motocross action at No-Name Promotions' CMC race at Sacramento's Prairie City OHV Park. Cantaloupi increased his string of moro victories to 19 straight in No -Name com pe tition after wire to wire fini shes in both th e l25cc and 250cc Pro divisions. Lesniews ki. from Plymouth. rode his Maico to I -I finishes for overall honors in Open Pro action. Randy Westbrook(S uz) ho leshot the first Open Pro moro , followed by . Reno's Allen Berluti (Mai) and Lesniewski . Westbrook held on for three laps with Berluti tight on his tail ; but it didn't take Lesn iewski long to pass th em both . Late in the race Berluti came back to take a short- lived lead. but Lesn iewski rega ined it and held on for th e win . Berluti took second with W estbrook th ird. It was Lesni ewski and Berluti out front again in the second rnoto with Lesniewski holding a half-second lead through most of the race. Late in th e rnoro . howeve r, Berluti m issed a shift and it looked like the half-second he lost might do him in . He made his come back m idwa y th roug h the last ' lap and passed Lesni ewski to take the lead . hold ing it until a hundred ya rds from the finish line when Lesn iewski sq ueezed by him to tak e th e checkered flag fir st. In the first 250cc Pro moto , Donnie Cantaloupi positioned his Yam aha into an ea rly lead . but he had Lesn iewsk i and Berluti · to co n te nd with ea rly in th e race . Then , heading up th e big hill . Berluri hit a rut and went flying over his handlebars. tak ing out Lesni ewski in th e p rocess. The result left Chris G rower (Ho n) in a so lid seco nd pla ce , fa r behind C~ntaloupi who 'glide d on to a n easy win . Canraloupi had no problem with the second rnoro . Berluti again . hounded Donnie ea rly in the race but he gradually dropped off the pace. Lesniewski held third most of the moro with Grower falling into a solid fourth place slot . As they crossed the finish line Cantaloupi was way out in front , with Berluti. Lesniewski and Grower following . Cantaloupi was devastating in the 125cc Pro competition, finishing the first moto with a 28-second margin over second place Suzuki mounted Da n a Wax ham . Donnie took the holes hot and spent the rest of the moto rid ing alone far ahead of the rest of the riders . Wax h am held secon d throughout th e race . Rick Woodson (Suz) and Brian Coulson (Suz) had an intense fight for third place, with Woodson th e victor. In the second moto Ca ntaloupi got off to a rare bad start and came out of the first turn dead last. As they headed into the second la p it was W ax ha m out 'front , with Cantaloupi now already more than halfway through the gro up of 12 riders up to fifth . Ron Taylor (Suz) followed Waxham , with Brian Coulson holding third . By the next lap Canraloupi had mo ved into second place , right on Waxharn 's tail. Predictabl y. Waxham fell prey to Cantaloupi shortly th ereafter. Donnie continued to pour it on, capturing the win . Wax ham followed fo r second with Taylor th ird. Kenny McKenzie (Suz) captured th e overall trophy in 125cc Intermediate action , but he had an exciting battle with Robert Presley (Suz) in th e second moto , provid ing on e of the most ex cit in g races of the day . Ron McCl ean (Su z) led ea rly in the moto but lost the posit ion to McKenz ie early in lap two . Corry Onley (Ya m ) challenged Kenny for the next several laps . but took a spill and dropped well back. Meanwhile Pr esley had been moving up and as the white flag appeared Presley was less than a halfsecond behind McKenzie. Then , suddenl y, Pr esley made his move , passed Mc Kenzie , and held on for the moto win . McKenzie rook the overall , however , with his 1-2 finishes.
