CA , DEC. 10 The Shadow Glen track was the site for American Motocross En terprises' last race for the 1978 season, and some excellent races there were. The first moto of the 125 Pro class was an ex-rn in icycle sta r showdown. The gate fell and , after a two month vacation of no t racing, it was Bobby Jones (Suz) in fro n t. with 15-year-old A.J. Whiting (Yamaha Motor/ AJRP) right on Jones' fender and J im Holley (Yamaha Motor) behind Whiting. Chappy Blose (HP Racing Prod.) and Suzuki's Brian Myerscough came off the line fourth and fifth. These five riders were so close that th e least little bobble or mistake would change everything. And sure ' enough , the fourth lap positions had shifted with Holley (Ya m) as the new leader and Whiting (Yam) ca p turing second. For th e first II la ps Holley and Whiting led th e way . Bu t in hot purs uit were Myerscough and Blose. On the 12th lap Myerscough slip ped past Whit ing and was after Holley . First rnoto finish ing order: Holl ey, Myerscough , Whiting , a nd Blose. The second m ot o was. a completel y different story. Blose pulled a huge ho les hot and was gone with Myerscough second off t he lin e . Holl ey, J on es. and Whiting were no t far beh ind . .Blose had comp lete control of the . track , knowin g Myerscough was right there waiting for a m istak e. Myerscough followed Blose around the track the first seven laps. By the halfway marker Blose's bike was heating up and losing power and Myerscough got by. Myerscough and Blose had completel y dominated this moto with Holley taking third and Whiting fourth . Overall finish ing positions were; Myerscough, Holley. Blose and Whiting. Open Pros were the next class to take on the track . Moto one saw Kolbe-sponsored Eddie Co le take the win start to finish on his Can -Am . Ronnie Gibson (Su z), Wally Koch (Mai), and Yamaha mounted Randy Lewis were where the battle was for second place . After a swap for positions Gibson: was in second and Jim Holley was sec ond A M E 125cc Pr o behind Bria n M yers cough. after Cole . But Cole was in control with no problems. The second moto saw Col e in front off t he start but with m echanica l problems he had dropped ba ck to sixth and Bob Bang (Ya m) and Joe Blanchard (Mai) were ba ttl ing for the lead. Bang took the lead for about six laps, th en Blanchard de cided it was his turn to lead. and that he did to the checke re d nag . But someh ow , over coming his mechanical problems , Cole had caught ba ck up to th ird , which gave him the overall win for the day . Koch took home second overall and third went to Joe Blanchard. After wat ching the 250cc Pro class grow and grow , it on~e aga in was the biggest class of the day with super com pe tition. In the first moto , as 21 raced for t he first sweeper, it was Kolbe Can -Am -mounted Greg Robertson all th e way , with fellow Ca n-Am rider Donnie Hansen settl ing into seco nd a nd Da vid Taylor (Yam ) running third . By th e second la p , Robertson was still in the lead with Hansen in pursu it. Chappy Blos e maneu vered his Ma ico through traffic and was soon commandin g second spot , noi far behind Rob ertson . Myerscough , who came off th e lin e in 14 th spot , was a lso doing so me catchi ng up and halfway through the race he was running sixth. Blose was rea lly picking up some seconds on Robertson and Hansen was back in th e ru nning after a spill. Myerscough was not third a nd afte r Robertson a nd Blose, but th ere wasn 't much time left. Ro n Turner (Yam ) and Bill Ovell ette (Yam) were goin' at it for the fifth spot with Turner bringin' it across the ch eckered in front of Ovellet te. First moto wrap-up was Robertson, Blose , -Myerscough , and Hansen. The second moto saw some erratic changes with Robertson and Blose bo th coming off th e line back in th e pa ck . Hansen had the second moto wire to wire after pulling th e holeshot and securing himself a safe, snug lead. "Radical" Ron Turner had hold of second with Mike Shoemaker running close behind. Another Can -Am rider, Kurt Sofka , had clinched fourth spot, and on the first lap around , Robertson was running sixth with Blose in striking distance of Robertson . The seco nd lap brought ye t another change: Robertson had moved to fourth but where was Blos e? 'Now behind Robertson was Pete Snorteland (Yam). Blose ended up wa tching from th e sid elines with a brok en rod . Once again making up incred ible time was Myerscough. Brian had moved from 12th to fourth and was beginning to close on Turner. Aga in as th e la ps dwindled down , Robertson had picked up some time on Hansen , but not enough for the lead. So second moto honors went to Hansen, Robertson, Turner, and Myerscough. After some super, terrific racing in this class. overall honors were : Rob ertson , Hansen , Myerscough , a nd Turner. Results MINI JR : 1. Juan Morales (S uzl; 2. Marty Herrara !Yam); 3.
