DEC. 17 Butch Laswell, aboard his brand new Husqvarna 390 for the first time , captured the overall win at the Motorcycle Ra cing Association of Nevada sanctioned 1978 Nevada State Championship Hare & Hound . It seems every year , the Silver c:ity Scramblers, sponsors of the Championship, work it right with the rain gods , who give the Scramblers just enough rain prior 10 the race day to keep the dust down and provide excellent traction . This year, their resident desert wizard " W hite King" over did it as the rains began late Saturday evening and continued right on through the entire race , varying from int ermitent showers to downright downpours. Generally , however , the water did not faze the racers , except for a few who expressed concern over the prospect of racing across the normally dry lake bed adjacent to the pit area near Jean . (jean : isn 't that where the new Nevada State pen is, the one with the eerie orange lights you see glowing off in the foothills from 1·15 heading towards Vegas from L.A. ? Yes.) Racing started sans the familiar smoke bomb (for damp , obvious reasons) and picking his way to an early lead was Butch Laswell, a local rider from Overton , NV . Laswell has been a hard charging 250 rider for the past co uple of years and this was his first ride in the open class . His lead q uickly developed into a strong one which he maintained for the balance of the race. Laswell's pie plate letter was K: do you suppose that means Kwick ?
