first. Suddenly the club's bank account showed new health and races started adding money to the . club's funds instead of losing money - and the new-found income was turned back into the club and riders through inc reased purses, It tak es a lot of time and effort to run an organi zat ion like the AFM , which in a typi ca l yea r has more than 1000 lic ensed racers com pe ting . When ever something needed to be done and hadn't been done by other volunteer workers , Pat Bresach was alwa ys th ere - no matter what her work load was already - to step in and get it done , It will take an army to do the work, she did : no one can replace her. Even the Evil Forces of the East can't keep a good Duck down. It was a day and a ride to make anyone with feelings give thanks just for being alive, The day was significantly marred, however, when one, of our members, Victor (White Body) Clark, sustained multiple fractures just north of Rasor Road . Judging by the marks left in the trail by. his bike, it was a hell of a crash, We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to Bill the fireman , who was riding with us, for his experience and cool -headed help at the scene, and to members of the Desert Knights M.C , who provided a pickup truck to haul Vic out. Thanks also to Willy and Pete of th e Sunland Shamrocks who assisted, Maybe it isn't proper to use Vic's misfortune to make this point , but if dirt riders . could pull together politically the way they pulled together in this instance. the BLM wouldn't stand a chance of getting awa y with th eir pending rip-off of our desert. GORDON MOORE Secretary, Lost Angels Wineland running problem, relate to them and to act on them . As a delegate to the Board from th e AMA Congress this past yea r I ha ve no "tra ining" period necessa ry - I'm ready to go to work on you r behalf. no matter what type of saddle you prefer to swing your leg across . I intend to be reachable to ea ch of you : you ma y write me at Box I , Los Angeles , CA 90041 (tha t's easy), or phone me most hours at 213 /283 -3437 . (that's easy too - it spells "buddies'") , I won't pretend to know it all , but I'm learning more all the time and you r thoughts and ideas will help. We 're going to make 't he AMA better than it's ever been beforel There's a saying, "Put your heart in - or get your tail out , " My heart's been there over 20 years - and my tail too , Let 's get me A-L-L in " , In our search this past year for the best possible Executive Director (we got him), one thing the Board members liked about several candidates was that they ask ed for th e job , It 's a sign of sinceri ty and ent husiasm : Okay - I'm asking you for th e job (wit hou t th e incentive of any salary) - Vot e for me , Do it now and show the Truste es th at you ar e ba cking your rep resent a tive .in cha rt ing t he futu re of your spo rt. Thank you! LYN N WINELAND AM A no, 15306 Los Angeles, CA The time to make you rselves known and heard is here , The December issue Pat Bresach of American Motorcyclist, contain ing the ballo t for Class A members to the Pat Bresach ha s pa ssed awa y, The AMA Board of Trustees is now m ailed impact of that awful fact hasn 't really a nd soon should be in your hands , I , been felt yet. More than a right -hand thank th ose of you who pu t me in person and wife to American Federa nomination for the sea t from Region 6 tion of Motorcyclists (AFM) president Southwest, including those of you who Harry Bresach; more than a tireless have offered such en couragement worker and organizer; more than a from road rider groups, ra cing d u bs, force dedicated to really making the industry people and unaffil iat ed ' idea of non -profit club road racing mot or cyclists. work, Pat Bresach was a nice lady and a concerned human being, I have been attending club meetings When Harry Bresach took over the . and d istrict sanction meetings as well AFM , things sta rt ed to change - with as organized events to get you r inPa t's help - in a big way, Suddenly, put as to you r needs and reactions the bureaucratic hassles and power to what is happening to th e sport tr ips perpetra ted by some of the tod ay, Of th e th ree candida tes I . have the broadest background in previous management of th e club were reduced by about 90 % . Suddenly the va rious types of ac tivities - which riders - not rul es or rul ers - ' came permits m e to best un derstand you r In my coverage of the Grea] Pumpkin Grand Prix at Corona Raceway, I reported ,tha t Steve Bauer, in his first race since his knee operation, took second 250 Pro to Goat Breker, This was wrong, Bauer put in a fine ride for first 250 cc while Breker took th e Open Pro class, My apologies go to Steve and his supporters at DG as well as my congratulations on an impressive performance. RON LAWSON Highland, CA SA M R.I.P. For the past five years, I have followed the guidelines of interscholastic competition as established by the State of California and the Ll.S; Olympic Committee, These guidelines clearly outline the standards necessary to maintain a recognized amateur athletic spon. The physical and mental a bilities of the panicipant is to be the criterion for judging excellence, not the amount of money a parent or sponsor can afford, . ' In the last two years , the cost of HSMX has risen beyond the reach of many students wishing to panicipate. This high cost has caused the large teams to dwindle as riders unable to afford the cost leave the team ana new riders, unable to afford the sport: never get started. ~ Edison, Huntington Beach and Pacifica High Schools at one time could field 25 or more riders at' a race, today they ha ve less than five riders each. Repeated attempts to reduce th e costs , and increase the number of participants. by receiving sponsorship from all phases of the motorcycle industry have met with failure . Not wishing to run counter wit established interscholastic standards I find it necessary to suspend the HSMX - program as of the Fall Semester of 1978. I wish to thank th e many people who helped the HSMX program. Most notable wer e Mr . George Suttles, Mr , & Mrs , Tom Brown, Mr. Chris Prats, Mr. John Deavers and Mr. Jerry White, , . JAMES MANNING President, Scholastic Association of Motorsport East Irvine, CA D.isqualif y the Duck? In keeping up with th e Latest Poop as I do every week , I not ed in Papa 's column tha t the Phantom Duck was in th e lead for th e Cycle N ews/West rider of th e year contes t. I really don't think th e Phantom Duck is qualified to be cons idered Rider of the Yea r.
