DEC . 5 Kolbe Cycles teammates Greg Robertson and Eddie Cole brought their bright. orange Can-Arns to California Racing 20 Club's regular Sunday motocross at Indian Dunes and took home wins in the 250cc and Open Pro class, wh ile Yamaha Motor Corp/ A.J . Racing Products-sponsored A. J . Whiting defeated DG 's "W ild Willy" Simons in I25cc Pro action. The biggest class of the day was the 250cc Pros , putting 25 riders on the gate. When the group came around the first turn, Donnie Hansen had th e lead ahead of Robenson and Cole, making a Kolbe Cycles parade. Hansen dropped his Yamaha last week for the Can-Am ride, as Robertson explained it, "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em." And for his first ride on th e Canadian mount , Hansen held a good lead for the first two laps. But in the sandwash of yet another newly-revised . International track, Robenson shot by for the lead which he held to the flag . Hansen and Cole held 2-5 for the remainder of the moto. When the gate dropped for the second moto, again it was Hansen with the early lead , but Robert son was back in the pack. With Cole on his fender . Robert son dispatched Mark Gambetta and Edwin Arnet in five laps, but it took seven more circuits before he could overtake Hansen. When th e checkers flew it was Robertson , Hansen and John Atwood . It 's been a while since Eddie Cole has shown his talents and taken an overall victory at Indian Dunes , but in the Open Pro class Eddie roo sted Ron Gibson and Bob Bang for a pair of moto wins . Gibson pressured early in the first moto , but Cole soon set sail for the flag and won with ample breathing room. In the second round Bob Ba ng was the trailer. and again Cole pulled away late in the race. It took two tough motos to decid e th e l 25cc Pro winner, and A.J. Whiting took the all -important second moto victory for the day's top money . Wild Willy Simons was th e only name to remem ber in the first rnoto as he held a commanding half-lap lead over Whiting and David Bak er when the checkered flag came ou t. The start of th e second moto was what killed Simons as he rounded the first turn in eighth wh ile Whiting took the ' holeshot. A.J. stretched a good lead for th e first half of th e race as Simons was dropping riders back right and left until he took over second place at the halfway mark . The remaining six la ps were terror for Simons as he was forced off the track a number of times by lapped riders in his pursuit for the lead. Whiting took the win and the overall with Simons Second and Baker third . Resu lts 125 PRO 1. AJ. Wh;tmg IYam); 2. W illy Simons : IYaml; 3. Oovid Baker ISuzl. 250 PRO 1. Greg Robertson IC·AI; 2. Temperature , fresh air and a little rain earlier in the week combined to d raw a strong crowd of MX fanatics in to the hills of Sunnymead for a day of fun and racing at DeAnza cycle park. One of the riders taking advantage of the fine weather was Fullerton Yamaha's Mark Ellis. In the last few months. Ellis has had more than his share of bad luck . but Sun d ay he came out with a new 250cc Yamaha and turned the tables. . At the start of 250cc Pro moto one, it was Dan ny Bu m (Suz) who grabbed the holeshot with Ellis . Gary Jones (Amx) and Craig Gormley (Yam) right behind. Burtt was moving but a second lap crash put him out of action for the rest of the day. One lap later. Jones also went down leav ing Gormley th e only rider within range of Ellis. At first Gormley seemed to be ga ining. but as the race came into the final laps . he decided to save his energy for th e next moto . It paid off. and Gormley pulled the holes hot. Ellis. however , was not about to let victory slip ' away that · easily. He dogged Gormley's shadow for eight laps. The two Yamaha riders were no more than inches apart at times . and J on es was hanging in there close behind. Gormley began to tire at the ha lfway point, and Ellis took the lead. Jones was coming on stronger now, and within a few laps he was right with Gormley. They diced back and forth . and then on the l l th lap they hit each other and went down . Gormley was quick to remount and lost no places but Jones fell back to sixth. Ellis finished with a huge lead. Overall results went Ellis , Gormley. J oe Liccandi (Hon) , Larry Ripley (Hon) and C . R . Tarvin (Hon) . Robert Ripl ey took his Honda to firs t overall in the 250cc Intermediate class over som e tough competition. He jumped into an early lead when th e pack shot off the line for moto on e . David Stewart (Yam ) was about fourth off t he line. but soon he was pushing Ripley for firs t. On the third lap, Stewart elbowed his way into the lead but no sooner than he was out front , he crashed. Rip ley was back on top with room to spare. The race for second place was then between Ray Holsheiner (Yam) and Dan Cannon (Suz) . Cannon took the position on lap six and hel d it all the way to the finish. Round two . saw Cannon grab the holeshot with Rip ley right behind. Can non might have had the race if his chain had not come off after a few laps in the lead. When that happened , first was inherited by Karl Davis (Yam ). who had just gotten by Ripley. Davis went on to win the moto , but th e overall went to Ripley due to Davis' fifth place finish in the first round.
