DEC . 3 Canyon Raceway . and the Arizona Motocross Association host· ed one of die biggest turnouts in Arizona motocross history. Riders from as far awa y as Yuma , Tucson and Blythe. CA. were at the gates before they even opened. Bosch was on hand to give continge ncy prizes to winners of Sportsman classes agai n this week. It was a perfect race day. sunny but cool . and rains from last week left th e track in excellen t condition. Chappy Blose decided to sta y at home this week end and race his favorite hometown track . Blose made b winning look easy as he made a clean ., swee p of both 125 and 250cc Pro , classes . ~t. The fi rst 125cc moto saw Scott Johnson push his Suzuki into the first turn ahead of Blose's HP'prepared Su zuki and Gary Dircks ' new '79 Yamaha. Blose and Dircks both went under Johnson on turn four. A bobble by Blose let Dircks sweep wide on th e berm at th e bottom of Suicide Hill to lak e the lead. Blose stuck ·himsel f to Dircks ' back wheel till lap four when . Dircks highsided on the top of a turn , leaving Blose with a firm lead. Pa t Imbriale, on his new Yamaha took over second and Gary Dircks ' littl e br oth er. Drey. in herited t hird. That's the way they fin ished the mota. The second moto holeshot went to Drey Dircks with Ch appy wiggling his Suzuki into second a round the first turn . Blose slid by Dircks on the first lap and proceeded to stretch ou t a commanding lead. The ba ttle raged for second as Drey tr ied to hold off a hard charge from Imbriale. Irnbriale finally got past the little Dircks on lap four . By the eighth lap David King , and Gary . Dircks had moved' into v striking distance of Drey , bu t time ra n out. When the checkers fell. it was Blose with the win , Imbriale second. Drey Dircks third . King fourth and Gary Dircks fifth . Overalls were in the same order. The 250cc Pro class was a Blose '" runaway. Chappy put his Maico into ) the lead off the line and never looked I back. Mike Chapin (H on ) controlled second spot from start to checkered flag and Da vid King had worked his way int o third by the end of the moto. The second moto saw Blose in = 'com plete control once again off the line with Honda -mounted Ma rk Koni etzka in second . Gary Wells (H o n ) was t hird and David King (Yam ) fourth . Kon ietzka d ropped to fourth when W ells and King flew by. Midwa y into the race W ells slowed with a flat tire leaving King the second spot. Ch apin was recovering from a ' bad sta rt and was blitzing his way through th e pack moving int o th ird . Dave Crawford (Mai) back from a series of inju ries that sidelined him for months . had mo ved into fourth . Two laps from the chec ke r ed flag . Crawford slowed with bike trouble and Andy Frola (Mai) took 'over fourth spot. Blose took the overall with back to ba ck wins , with Chapin second and King t hird. Gary Dircks. on a borrowed CanAm . pulled the holeshot in the first Open Pro moto. Mike McCarty (Suz) came off second and Keith La mpa rter third . Their positions held firm . Th e second moto belonged to McCarty off the line and looked like lie had it sewed up till his seat came off. Lamparter took over the lead. but Ga ry Dircks had worked his way up through the ranks after a poor start and sna p ped the lead aw ay from Lamparter on the last lap to cinch the ove ral l. Gillman, Ward take charge at CMC Saddleback By Chris Peterson ORANGE. CA . DEC . 3 Team Suzuki's Scott Gillman showed just why he is on the team by winning the 250 and 500cc Pro classes at this Continen ta l Mot e -sports Club race. Gillman is a strong starter. a strong finisher . and should be a strong contender in the '79 AMA /Mr. PiBB 500cc National MX Championship Series. The 500cc Pros started first. with Dave Williams (Mai) first around the first tu rn . Gillman follow ed along with . Alan Smith (H us). Val Tamietti (Mai) and Bob Marino (Yam) . Within th e first lap . Gillman passed Williams and stayed out front the e nt ire r ace . Williams had second locked up with Smith t hird. Tamietti and Marino took fourth and fifth . Scott Gillman won two classes at CMC's Saddleback motocross. Round two was a repea t for Gillman , with Williams once again taking th e holeshot. Gillman passed him in the back section of the cou rse, again on the first lap. Ma rino , Sm ith and Tamietti followed the two . Smith got by Marino and Williams at t he halfway point. Tamietti got by them also . At th e finish it was Gillman, Sm it h . T a mietti and Williams; Marino b roke on t he last lap after a good rid e. Gillman took first overall , of course. followed by Sm ith, Williams and T am iet ti. T wo divisions of 250cc Pros were run due to the large turnout . with a final ra ce for the bucks. Division I went to Clark Jones (Hon) , with Tamietti (Mai). Pete Wanket (Yam). and Tim Lunde (Mai) rounding out th e top four . Gillman . Jeff Ward (Yam); J im Tarantino (Suz) and Brian Myerscough (Su z) were first through fou rth in Division II . The final started off with Ward p ulling the holeshot followed by Gillman, Tarantino. Tarnietti, Steve Blackman (Mai) and Wankel. Gillman passed Ward on the first lap. and Ward crashed trying to keep up with the Suzuki ace . After remounting, he was far back in the ' pack. Meanwhile , Tarantino, Tamietti, Blackman and Wanket were having it out fo r second place. Halfway through the moto, Wanket made his move and passed Blackman and Tamietti . Tarantino took a header and was well back in the pack. At the finish. Gillman took his second overall win of the day . Wanket was second and T ami etti was th ird. followed by Tamietti and Ward, who made up a lot of time . T im Lunde was sixth . The first 125cc Pro moto saw Brian Myerscough and his new '79 Suzuki get th e holeshot, Scott Burnworth. also on a '79 Suzuki, was second and being chased by Ward and Bobby Sullivan (Suz). Myerscough ra n awa y with the rac e while Burnworth maintained a fair distance over Ward . Su llivan had a get-off and was back in the pack. Rick Maki (Yam ) took over fourth with Steve Shippy (Suz) fifth, Posit ions maintained to the flag. Burnworth took the second moto lead over Sullivan. Myerscough an d Ward. Myerseough went from third to first before the end of the first lap. but fell on the second and lost a lot of time . Burnworth was first , but Ward had passed Sulliva n and was moving u p on the leader. Sullivan was passed by Maki and Ship py while Myerscough ' was cutting a swath through the pack. passing riders on every lap . Halfway through the moto , Ward passed Burnworth and Myers cough passed Maki and Shippy to take over third. At th e finish it was Ward. Burnworth, Myerscough , Shippy . Maki and Sullivan.
