NOV . 12 For its last race of the season , the American Federation of Motorcyclists had to change the track configuration. Because of heavy rains an d mudslides. it was im possible to go around turns 7 and 7A . so th e rid ers had to use the Na scar stock ca r cou rse and aft er turn 6 went directly to turn 8 and used that very long straightaway. . In the 41 Occ Production class it was at. decisive. bat tle between Alan Gingerelli and Gennady Luibimsky. both challengers for th e title. Befor e this race, Luib imsk y led Gingerelli by four points and for Gennaby to catch the title he had to win ; same th ing for Gingerelli . But as soon as the ra ce sta rted. it was Thad Wolff on his Specialists II RD400 Yamaha who took the lead. Luibimsky was second on his Harry Hunt ROS50 with Gingerelli (N O RDS50) and Ed T oomey (T MC ROS50) right behind. They stayed in that order for two laps . Luibimsky. trying to attack Wolff without success. remained in second place, while Toomey was charging after Gingerelli, finall y pass ing the'77 410 Production Champ on the sixth lap . A lap later , Alan was once again in front of Toomey. Up front Gennady was securing his second place in order to take the title. Wolff, after a beautiful ride , fell on the last lap in turn nine and hit the wall - he will be all right. A very happy Luibimsky crossed th e finis h line . the title in his pocket; Toomey finally took second with Alan Gingerelli third . Randy returnin g Mamola was on J im Doyle's OW S I . in wha t might be one of his last appear- ances in California . Mamol a will rid e next season in th e 250 and S50cc World Championship with Bim oto Yamaha and will resid e in Rimini , It al y. The first part of t he race was a battle between Harry Klin zmann (Mr AI's Restaurant) and Mamola ; Spen cer and Bruce Hammer (KalGa rd Yam ) right behind th e lead ing duo . Harry and Rand y excha nged places during four laps . before Spencer de cid ed to attack and ch a llenged the lea der . He pa ssed to the fro nt on the sixth lap and stayed th ere two laps, before Mamola recaptured th e lead for good . Harry fini shed second. Spencer third (no po in ts). and Bru ce Hammer , who was riding with th e AMA restrictor plates. was fourth . The Production ra ce was th e domain of Wendell Phillips on a Mr Jag's 750 Norton , who upset Dennis Smi th on a Del Am o GS 1000 Suzuki and Vance Brees e (Euroman 850 Guzzi) . In the 250cc GP race it was another victory for Marnola , who easi ly won th e race aft er a sh ort battle with Luibimsky (Harry Hunt TZ250 ). and Dave Garroute (250DKG) second and third .
